dodge suburban?

"powerstroke" is just a name. the 7.3 "powerstroke" is the same engine as the 88-93 7.3 and 83-87 6.9 non-turbo IDI's. they are all made by navistar and are all related.

88-93 7.3 is IDI. Ford started calling the 7.3 a 'powerstroke' when the engine was changed to a computerized, DIRECT INJECTION, turbo diesel. No chit navistar made them!!!

the powerstroke is still made by navistar. its the same engine, just upgraded with a turbo and DI.

Finally!!!!! An agreement!

I didn't bother reading through all the posts, but that is definately a photochop, they left the "LT" emblem behind the rear door. Ram front, Tahoe or suburban rear upper.

So your saying that a Stock Dodge lets say 3/4 ton would out run a stock Ford 3/4 ton? sorry I don't think so! I would be looking back in my rear view at ya. The powerstoke turns up so much quicker.(smaller connecting rods)

The cummins may be the better engine of the two, less moving parts, but the ford is the better truck.. Now that's not to say the PSD isn't a strong motor. I watched my buddy pull a dump loaded w/ logs sideways up a hill to get him unstuck w/ a PSD.

Ok the cummins has less moving parts which means a longer life? There is one problem the rest of the dodge as in the tranny cant handle the extra power. Ive know a couple people that have blown there tranny. As for ford thats probably the way I'm going to go. You can hardly find a dodge for cheap thats still in good condition. Ford has been building these things for a long time and have been a big seller unlike the older dodges (which is the only thing i can afford) As for the Chevy- Isuzu engines are actually pretty good. Chevy builds a good diesel engine too bad the rest the truck sucks.

Loaded, you bet your ass a cummins would outrun a PSD. If I wanted a fast reving engine I'd get a v8 gasser, diesels in pickups are made for low end flat torque curves. The simple fact is that it's a more robust and less complicated engine in a truck that is not inferior to any ford.
There is a reason semis don't use v8s anymore, it's unessecary complexity for no gain. Ford sells on hype, the manly "Powerstroke" name and "V8" dont mean shit to me but they sure sell to your average joe. I've driven an 07 6.7 6 speed, let me tell you it has plenty of balls for a truck that weighs 7K+, not to mention the factory exhaust brake is bitchen as all get out. The amount of bad trannys compared to ford are about the same from what I've seen, I know several people with CTDs with original auto trannys including a 1st gen with 300K. You wanna know how to fix the auto tranny problem? It's the same solution for RBVs, get a goddamn manual or stop whining when autos die, auto aren't as reliable, same as the CTD vs PSD, the auto is more complex=more shit to go wrong.

Dodge built that suv about the same time they had the T-Rex concept!

I used to be huge into dodge until i discovered the rangers but i think they built that for south America or mexico it was suppose to come over to the states but it never made it. It even had a different name but i can't remeber it.

i didn't pay to much attention to that photo but they did build it if you look in back issues of motor trend/ automobile or one of those mags from the early 90's you'll find the arti. on it.

Dodge is far worse at that than Ford is. Hence why they quit making V-10's, the only reason people want a 3/4 ton+ Dodge is so they can get the venerable "Cummins" name and little else. They did the same thing with the wanna be Hemi.

I see far more Super Duty's lurking around farms and construction sites than I do Dodge's or Chevrolet's, with a pretty even smattering of 5.4's, V-10's and Diesels.

I had a friend tour the Certified Transmission rebuilding joint in Omaha, they said they rebuild more Ford truck tranny's than anything else... because there are a lot more of them out there than anything else.

Because the Cummins name carries reputation of a tough reliable motor, hemi dont mean shit to me either.

You can defend it all you want, the PSD is not even on par with the cummins, work on one, take a look at the parts and how they work. Now, the 7.3 IDI turbo was a decent engine. HUEI injection is a joke and whoever was working at CAT that designed it needs a head examination. Glow plugs, also a joke, Cummis uses grid heaters and you dont even need them till it gets damn cold, I've started a 1st gen without grids on a 25* day no problem, lose your glowplugs on a PSD like they often do you may be screwed when it gets cold. Give a PSD a mechanical pump and grid heaters and it could be OK, until then you can have them.

Yo genius..... this thread turned into PSD vs. Cummins NOT Ford vs. Dodge. So while you tried to disprove XTrEmE9156, Hahnsb2, and everyone else that owns and / or likes Cummins, mainly B-series engines, you ACTUALLY proved their point with that above statement. Your input was greatly appreciated and......... better luck next time. :icon_thumby:

Ford has been using engines from the supposed fly by night company International/Navistar for 30 years, if they really were crap that rarely started... no amount of advertising would keep them on the market by now.

Farmers and construction companies are not average joes that buy a diesel just to tug their bass boat around. They are the people that when they trade in their trucks you can't help but envision it being drug down a gravel road behind a main battle tank on whichever side it found the easiest... with the windows down. They are used and abused.

Ford hasn't made the 6.0 for trucks since the 2007 model year, both glow plugs and HEUI injection systems died with the 6.0. The 6.4 is what the 6.0 should have been... and would have been had it not been rushed into production to match up with the TorqueShift. Dodge has had more than their share of mess ups too.

Inlines are great, they use the layout for power generators, farm equipment, semis and wherever length and weight isn't a terrible concern. A inline engine is quite a bit heavier than a comparable V engine, and is a much tougher package to fit in a light pickup that does have space constraints. Inlines engines may be king in semis, but aside from the Cummins and four bangers in compacts they have been dead in pickups after a long heyday of various straights and slants.

Dodge still uses mechanical injection pumps? Wonder how they get them past emissions? :icon_confused:

There are obviously a lot of people that like their Power Strokes as well, as they by far and away have the truck market by the tail. Dodge is a distant 3rd place in truck sales behind Chevy and just ahead of GMC. Really rather pathetic when you look at the numbers.

Powerstroke = Ford, Navistar doesn't use the term to reference their engine and many of the controls for the PSD are Ford only. The Navistar 6.0 was a gem compared to the early Power Stroke 6.0. I am not that familiar with the inner workings of the Dodge/Cummins relationship but I imagine it is a similar deal without the name difference, the heavier trucks that the Cummins goes into gets different emission controls than the Dodge trucks.

Heui didn't die with the 6.4, what injection system do they use if they don't?? Early navistar to current VT-365 engines were just as shitty as 6.0 powerstrokes. Font open your mouth unless you know.
