What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Not for the 6040 but just the seating area.

Thanks, I should’ve mentioned that I did find the individual seat cushions and I even found the bench seat cushion, but I hate paying 70 or $100 for something I’m going to have to probably modify anyway.

@SenorNoob ’s passenger seat idea is great, I’ll be looking at that when I go to the pull a part

Oh, and I finally made a plate and put the TRS/Carlisle “40th anniversary of the Ranger” sticker on the Road Ranger.

I don’t like to rush into these things…

Is the 20 parts of the 60 still good? If it is you could get the rest from a passenger seat in the yard. It's one of the benefits of buckets. Usually the passenger seat is in much better shape and has the same pad and cover.

Another thought. If I take a passenger seat off of the track mechanism, won’t it just bolt down on the driver side track mechanism? The slide and recline are part of the track and not the seat, yes/no?

If I do that, and I build a center console, that could solve a couple other minor problems I have since the cab of that truck is so small. Not enough storage, and another place to put some speakers, and….

What are everybody’s thoughts?

i noticed drum brake hardware on rock auto is either $5-8 or $18-25
can someone explain the price difference?

also whats up with availability of 15 different axle-hubs from the same company all varying significantly in price?

Rock Auto is not a retail outlet like AutoZone or NAPA. Rock Auto’s business model is to liquidate inventory that regular retailers want to get rid of because it’s no longer profitable to them. So the prices they charge us vary by the prices they had to pay for the excess inventory. And just like the retailers, they could have several different manufacturers’ versions of the same part.

If Rock Aito has the same item from different suppliers or different manufacturers, they list them out with the price they would have to get for them. They also break them out in categories of economy, and whatever. For my old collector oddball stuff, considering I’m 71 years old and I may not be around when something wears out the next time I replace it, I usually buy the cheap cheapest thing I can unless it’s obviously junk. A lot of other guys on TRS, who have to depend on their vehicles, may choose a higher price item because they want the longevity and better quality.

I think what you’re seeing from Rock Auto and other suppliers is this kind of scenario

It may. You have to look at how it mounts. Sometimes the tilt/recline levers end up in the wrong side though

Look at the components included. For example, the higher priced Carlson kit includes the star wheel adjusters and some other components.

Are you looking at the right parts? There is no "axle hub" for your rear axle. Look at "axle shafts" under driveline parts. Make sure you pick the right one. Driver side is a different length than passenger side.

heres images of what i was talking about.
from what ive researched, the significant price difference with the hardware kits come from metal coating and hardening. ill just pick the cheapest of the higher priced kits.
Is there any way to differentiate quality difference with 'axle shafts'? I imagine the cheaper ones run the risk of being unbalanced

great info yall

I've ordered the USA axles from RockAuto and they sent me the wrong ones
 Ended up ordering from Summit for the same price and better product.

I haven't posted pics lately but I've started getting the new interior in my '97.

im gonna put my rear end back together with old gasket and 90% of the old gear oil + some fresh and then drive to pick-n-pull and see if i can find a decent $60 passenger side axle. ....hmmm, that becomes $85 with autozone bearing and seal. Ill put in fresh oil when the new parts arrive.

....could yall make a recommendation on 'axle shafts' between my choices of:
USA standard gear
Motive Gear
Dana
Dorman
Richmond

reallly good to know that the passenger and driversides are different lengths, ty for that tidbit of info Curious Hound, youve been a great help throughout all of this.

A few things

First, if you’re going to copy one of us members in any responses or posts, you should put an “@“ sign in front, and then the member will be copied. So no to “curious hound”. Yes to “ @Curious Hound “. And when you start typing in the members handle after that sign, usually a selection will pop up and you can just pick from the list.

Second, from the post before, the inexpensive price should not result in defective products. Any of the axle shafts, if they are the correct size for your truck, should work with no problem. The increased price is usually to get parts from recognized quality providers, maybe higher quality and more durability, as opposed to no name Chinese or Indian products. Having said that, to your “how do you tell which ones are better quality?” Pretty much age, busted knuckles, and gray hair. But you are on the right track. You don’t have to have them yourself, but you’re doing the right thing with checking with this crew on their opinions. Most of us are old farts.

As far as getting the cheapest of the perceived higher quality items, assuming higher quality because of higher price? I think in general, the higher prices would be for recognized producers and higher quality. But, the concept the actual price is a measure on how good or bad any one of them is compared to another, even in that higher category, has no basis in reality. That again comes from the gray hair.

Hope it helps.

I got Richmond when i replaced both of mine, did a complete swap, shaft, bearing, and seal.

Out of the brands you listed, Dorman would be my last choice. But, even they should be suitable. Dana is a well-established mame brand that I would trust. On the 4x4's, the front axles are made by Dana - the Dana 28, Dana 35, Dana 44, Dana 60. They make other things like transfer cases, also. I don't know if they manufacture any 7.5" or 8.8" axles for Ford. But I would trust their product. I have respect for Richmond and Motive Gear. But no real experience to base that on.

Only really required if you want to be sure the person sees your mention of their name. That throws a notification in their mailbox so they know you need attention to something.
