im gonna put my rear end back together with old gasket and 90% of the old gear oil + some fresh and then drive to pick-n-pull and see if i can find a decent $60 passenger side axle. ....hmmm, that becomes $85 with autozone bearing and seal.
reallly good to know that the passenger and driversides are different lengths, ty for that tidbit of info Curious Hound, youve been a great help throughout all of this.
A few things
First, if you’re going to copy one of us members in any responses or posts, you should put an “@“ sign in front, and then the member will be copied. So no to “curious hound”. Yes to “
@Curious Hound “. And when you start typing in the members handle after that sign, usually a selection will pop up and you can just pick from the list.
Second, from the post before, the inexpensive price should not result in defective products. Any of the axle shafts, if they are the correct size for your truck, should work with no problem. The increased price is usually to get parts from recognized quality providers, maybe higher quality and more durability, as opposed to no name Chinese or Indian products. Having said that, to your “how do you tell which ones are better quality?” Pretty much age, busted knuckles, and gray hair. But you are on the right track. You don’t have to have them yourself, but you’re doing the right thing with checking with this crew on their opinions. Most of us are old farts.
As far as getting the cheapest of the perceived higher quality items, assuming higher quality because of higher price? I think in general, the higher prices would be for recognized producers and higher quality. But, the concept the actual price is a measure on how good or bad any one of them is compared to another, even in that higher category, has no basis in reality. That again comes from the gray hair.
Hope it helps.
