HI,
My Transmission is wore out.. shifter very sloppy, In fact I can move it to where the shifter points toward the driver but can be ratcheted (you can fell it go click click click) back into place, case wore out not pin's. Can't find any 84's in my U pull it area..
So any help would be appreciated

Apparently they had a 5 speed option that year with the 4 cylinder also. Here is one in Idaho.

HI,
Yes I had called All hours and they told me they had NO 84's .. what I'm looking for is not a 5 speed it a 4 speed with OD.. and is a Truck transmission .. with a lower 1st gear to get heavy loads moving over a plain 5 speed..

Typically a 4-speed plus overdrive is just referred to as a 5-speed because you have 5 forward gears counting the OD.

Ford used a wide variety of different transmissions in the early Rangers/Bronco II’s and saying you have a 4 or 5 speed manual doesn’t exactly mean much without identifying the exact transmission. There also is the issue where since a number of the random early manual transmissions were only used in a handful of years and those vehicles are 30+ years old, they are getting harder to source and sometimes you have to move in a different direction to get around availability issues. Part of the territory.

I wish the manufacturers hadn't used the "with overdrive" language. It makes things so frickin confusing for people.

4 speed might have 1-2-3-4 (no low or OD) or Low-1-2-3 or 1-2-3-OD. They all have FOUR forward gears. Ford used all of those in the 80's in various applications...
5 speeds are almost always 1-2-3-4-OD - 5 forward gears

I'm not sure what manufacturers originally called it, or if using 1:1 to name the trans might be "technically correct", but "4-speed with OD" to refer to a 5-speed is right up there with "front rear end" in my book.

At least call it "plus OD" or something so it's not ambiguous.

2wd or 4wd?

Edit: nvm, you're halfway across the US.

Hi,
2WD.. but it is quite tall on 14" wheels .. The Guy called a Toyo Koygo .. the reason I say 4 speed with over drive as the shifter is marked that way..(factory). I see the one linked from above show's one but doesn't go anywhere..

I don't think Ford made a shift knob with a 5th gear marked that had less than 6 gears, they're all that OD marking. Although I haven't seen a knob for a ZF6 since it has two overdrives... there's 5 gears so people call them 5 speeds... way simpler, with that shifter knob you get things like one of those "customer states" videos I saw a while ago of a mechanic whos customer complained that their Ranger engine stalled when put in drive, they were referring to the OD but since manual transmissions aren't common anymore someone somehow thought that was just the auto option or something?

I always thought OD on the pattern was goofball. My jeep and I think the later knob in my other truck just say 5. But I also get that certain shit's a product of its time, and if I'd been driving in the '80s, maybe it would feel more natural.

Anyway, if nobody within hundreds of miles has an exact match, you've gotta broaden your search. Car-part non-interchange search '83-'87 shows a handful of potentials, especially since the TK5 should have a removable bell.

If all else fails, a quick look over old forum posts seems like you could be able to swap in an M5OD as long as you can figure out the floor plate, output yoke, and hydraulics.

Ford made a 4 speed overdrive, it had 4 forward gears and 1 reverse gear. It was found in the larger f100 and f150 trucks. It was called the RUG, the SROD, and various other names. It was a lousy transmission and did not hold up very well.

They took the old 4 speed toploader type transmission, and flipped the arm for 3-4 gears around. So what used to be 4th was now 3rd, and was 1 to 1. Then they put gears in the old 3rd gear position to get overdrive. The gear spread was horrible. I doubt a little 4cyl could even handle it and would probably stall they had so much rpm drop between 2nd and 3rd gear.

This is also why you are probably having trouble finding one. You need to keep that 4 cyl wound up, and it will still get decent fuel mileage. Too much overdrive is going to kill it.

HI LOL
I don't know what you are talking about.. 4 speed with Od being 4 forward gears and 1 reverse??
This is a Factory stock 84 ranger 4 cyl. with 4 speed with Od. with 5 forward gears and 1 reverse.. Sounds like your talking about the OLD 4 speeds with a Granny 1st. gear. with an overdrive added out the back.. NOT on an 84.. the 84 is a small truck , way smaller than a F100 or F150 Ranger of old.

Then you have what is commonly known as a 5 speed. The tranny I was talking about was only in the f100 and f150's. Your reference to your trans being a 4 speed was throwing me off. Call it a 5 speed and everything will start going your way when looking for parts and working on this truck.

I think the general naming convention on car-part.com being total gears including OD is the clincher here. Car-part (and participating yards) call the TK4 a "4-speed" and the TK5 a "5-speed". Done deal.
