Farm and Garden

No pictures to show. I didn't get as much winter prep done with the garden as I would have liked. I wanted to have a layer of mulch manure over the leaves before it got cold. Well, it got cold sooner than expected and other things that needed fixed now got in the way. So, only 1/2 of the garden bed got covered (the half that typically runs out of leaves in past years). Like it or not, will have to do for this year. I did get a broad fork to make breaking up of the soil and mixing the leaves into the dirt quicker and less labor intensive. So. I'll be playing with that in a few weeks to get ready for this year's growing season.
I’m too busy with my late winter V8 crop.

Yes. Harvest went well. Still cleaning and preparing to add herbs and spices.
Going to serve it with a side dish of auto-trans, followed by manual T-case for dessert.

Meanwhile in snowy, wet, windy, warm (whatever season it decides) Iowa, the farming has begin with a fresh batch of poultry and water fowl. Also, starting the youngest young.

Im promoting a new product, I get buckets for free at work & the chickens do nothing but poop all winter so why not? might be a hit!

Looks like they come with a lid. That price is cheaper than the big box stores charge up here. Might be a hit...

Got some more work done on repairs to the 3-point brush hog and making some clearance for the driveshaft. Antique tractor problems, I was told to run an over-run coupler so it doesn’t push me downhill but that makes clearance on the front of the deck a real issue. A modern tractor that I can run the driveshaft and hydraulics separately wouldn’t be an issue.

I don’t see why this won’t work though, the blade shouldn’t get into my clearance notch unless something goes wrong under there. I may add some gussets and obviously still need to patch in my clearance notch, which I’m thinking I may do 1/4” plate on the angles just to give some resistance if things do go badly under it at some point. May add some gussets too since the original had 1/4” angle across there and I used 1/8” C channel. Even thinner though, C channel should be stronger than angle.

No pictures but the garden is all prepped for planting. Jessica wants to wait until after Mother's Day just because there is always that chance there will be a freak freezing temp drop before then.

The broad fork made the job of breaking up n the dirt so much easier.

My brother had a over running clutch on his 8N with a mower and I don't remember this being required? They are not that big and mount on the tractor's PTO shaft.

Running one without a clutch makes you plan ahead, I ran mine with a B John Deere for a couple years.

My A-C's with the hand clutch are much more civil lol.

Mother's day has already past... was May 10th.

I tilled in about two foot deep of last year's leaves. Also added 8 more bags of manure compost. This soil is looking really really good.

My garden went in a couple days before mother's day. As always... plants went in with some Happy Frog organic fertilizer.

Looked yesterday and have potatoes popping in my newly formed potato hill.

This is all new territory for me. The over run clutch I got doesn’t stick out really far, but it does mess with the driveshaft angle. I don’t know if a different brush hog would have more clearance or what. Even with my notch I can’t lift the brush hog all the way, the notch would have to be a lot deeper and I was reluctant to do that.

Axle shaft seals and brakes need replaced on my tractor. My clutch may be about gone too, tried to adjust it and it didn’t seem to adjust. With my property having a decent slope to it, I didn’t want to have the brush hog push me all the way down and into the creek. If I was running around on a more flat area with the tractor in good shape I might consider removing the over run clutch from the equation. A more modern tractor that you can run the hydraulics and PTO separately would be nice, but this is doing what I need it to do.

The more dire the situation the more ambition you find to kick something out of gear, either the PTO or transmission and make it stop. :icon_twisted:

I don't remember what kind he has, it is a newer gold one like from a farm store. Mine is an archaic green and red pull behind.

My 3-point is an old Howse Ag-Mo 5’ but I also have an even older pull-behind. The 3-pointer I thought would be easier to get into some of the areas I’m trying to mow and needed less work than the pull-behind so that’s what I fixed first. Since what I have sort of working is doing what I need it to do, I’m waiting on doing anything else to it until after I deal with my green Ranger and my shop, because after the shop is done I’ll have room for a shop press.

Maybe it was Memorial Day then. I'm just the grunt who does the manual labor
