The Gas Prices here in puyallup washington suck =(

I got into an argument at a gas station back when prices were high at one point. Pump shut me off at something stupid like $80-100. I complained inside that they need to do something about that and they tried to tell me it was my card that was limiting me. I replied that no, my card doesn’t put limits like that because it’s a business card, I could use it to turn every pump on at once if I need to because that’s the point of a business card, if I need to fill up a crews worth of trucks and equipment, I can. They still insisted it was my card limiting me on buying gas. Some people’s children…

I tried to buy two gallons of gas once at a gas station. Blew the guys mind.

"Two gallons of gas please"

"How much?"

"Two gallons"

"How many dollars?"

"Free?"

"No, how many dollars you want"

"whatever two gallons of gas cost, you tell me"

I had the same problem, Station saying it wasn't them limiting, Bank saying it wasn't them,
Did a bunch of following up on it.

It turns out there is a middle man between the station and the bank, The company that owns the credit/debit card machine/system the station uses and processes every credit/debit transaction is the one that puts limits and also charges the station a small percentage of every transaction.

Some gas stations it’s a thing they can set, I know people that have worked for stations. They can also limit how many gallons instead of setting a high limit for cost. And I know banks/cards can set limits.

Didn’t think about the middleman though, but I would guess that the station could complain to them that the limit needs to go up with fuel costs. I won’t stop at any stations that limit me to $80-100 because when you put $150-200 in a truck in one go, it’s a nuisance. Yeah, I can go in and tell them to turn the pump on, but I just want to fill and go, I have other things to do. Also the reason why if I can’t afford it, whatever I’m in gets a full fill. Yeah, that can rapidly get expensive, but what’s more efficient? Stop once and spend that money or stop 3-4 times and put $50 in each time? My time is valuable and I’m spending the money either way, stop once and move on.

Almost filled my Superduty tonight. Diesel was $5.899 at my old favorite station. Went to my new favorite and it was inly $5.499. But they have the pump setup to stop at $125. ALMOST got a full tank.
I traded my 2024 Ram 2500 6.4L gasser for this Ranger. Besides the poopy brakes and transmission, Gas was killing me. When gas was 3 bucks a gallon, I didn't mind getting 9mpg. It had a 31 gallon tank, if I remember right... filling her up every two weeks was getting stupid expensive.
Diesel right now is horrible... I feel bad for the oil burners right now.

This drives me nuts. Once in a while I run across a station where the card reader doesn't work and they require pre-pay. I go inside and tell them I need to fill up. Always the same response - how much money do you want to put on the pump? I don't fawking know nor do I care. A full tank. I don't understand why pumps and math and gallons and credit cards work differently inside the store.

I feel the same way.

They don't. It's our mindset. We go by gallons. They only see the amount. We just don't normally have to do the math. The fact is, the amount they're asking for is the hold that is placed on your card, and simultaneously the kick off point for the pump. If the pump kicks off before you reach the amount you swipe/tap/whatever, that's what you pay. If they kick the pump off at your requested amount, that's what you pay.

So, if gas is $5/gal and you've got a 20 gallon tank but it's 2/3rds full, buy a tank of gas. Tell 'em $100. Or the hell with any math, and just always say $75, unless your tank is bigger than that.

That’s what I do. Just make sure whatever number I throw out at them is high enough. I do that when I’m paying cash. Here, I’ll be back for what I don’t use.

Finally got the bike fired back up this morning. Just need to get the plastics back on and my fuel costs drop by 60%.

I’ve had that argument trying to fill up chainsaw gas and the like. The local gas station that has non-ethanol doesn’t have a pay-at-the-pump option for that pump, you have to go inside and have them turn it on. Like, I didn’t look at the pump and do the math, I have two 1-gallon cans to fill with 1 gallon so the mix comes out right. Why isn’t gallons an option?
