How do I stop the fuel filter lines from covering me in gasoline when I take it off? I let the fuel tank go to almost empty, parked it on an uphill driveway, depressurized the fuel rail from the little Schrader valve, even tried pinching the soft line going to the tank with some vice grips and it still spews fuel everywhere and so I can't change it. What am I doing wrong?

Wear a face shield to keep it out of your eyes and mouth. Then accept your new cologne.

did you start the truck with the fuel pump relay removed? thats how i always did it and i only get a little drip out of the lines
This right here. let it die and crank it again. you will get some dribble or a light splash but nothing noteworthy. shouldn't even have to do any of the park uphill or pinch off lines, just yank the relay and run it.

If you don't want to go digging for that (on my '90 I think it's under the fuse box under the hood) you can unplug the inertia switch, the haynes manual for my Tempo I had way back when said to wack the inertia switch with a hammer handle or something like that to trip it...

I would never intentionally trip the inertia switch. They don't always like to reset and stay reset. Unplug the wires from it, sure. But unplugging fuel pump relay should be incredibly easy to do.

Well, somehow I remember seeing that tip in the Haynes from when I read it somewhere around '98... why that is still taking up space I really don't know... haven't done it since that time on the Tempo...

Next part is I honestly haven't had to look for any of the relays in my '90 somehow (yes, even through an engine swap), one of these days I need to get my dome light working right but other than that everything somehow works... not that there's anything electronic on it...

I’m not convinced there is a good way to deal with it unless you install shutoffs on the line or a canister filter, but since Covid I haven’t been able to find a high pressure canister filter setup. I just get the new filter ready to go and deal with it. Messy pain in the neck it is. Engineers need to get to try to deal with the stuff they create so they know what not to do in design.

back in my Taurus SHO days it was a regular ritual to smack the rear fender to trip the fuel cutoff switch as a theft deterrent.
did it dozens of times to a couple different cars with no issues. those were '92 & '95.

the switch in my 2005 Ranger was a different story. it turned into a PITA after a nasty bump tripped it.
