2.0L ('83-'88) Idles fine, stalls as soon as I step on gas. In neutral or first gear

The clutch seems to be on its way out, had issues with it before parking it for the winter. I have rebuilt the 1bbl carb and replaced the purge canister valve (old one would click sporadically when engine got to full operating temperature) the new valve does the same thing though. The carb has a known vacuum leak at the throttle shaft.
 
Assuming the problem you want to fix is the stalling, take the breather off, engine off, and take a flashlight and look down the carb throat. While doing that, take your other hand and move the throttle open. As soon as you move the throttle, you should see a strong stream of gas shoot into the carb throat. No hesitation, no puny dribble. If you see no stream of gas, or it is weak, I suspect you have lost a check ball or check pintle when you rebuilt the carb. Easy to do. Best thing to do when rebuilding a carb is to get a old metal cookie sheet and do the rebuild inside that, to catch any small parts.
 
Thanks for the advice! I checked and noticed the faintest dribble come out of the highlighted spot in the picture I attached. I guess I will be taking the carb apart and checking. I think my next step after this will be tuning the carb.

If you have your face too close to the top of the carb, the fuel may splash you. That is how strong it should be. This is called the "accelerator pump" circuit. I do not know what carb you have, some had a carter 1 barrel and 87-88 models had a 2 barrel carb.

Oh yeah, I definitely splashed myself. I first tried using carb cleaner and air from my compressor. Neither of those worked. I was able to pry the check weight out and fit a safety pin directly in that nozzle passageway and it cleared right out. After a rough start and idle it was able to move again by it's own power. 😊 thank you for the advice, I'm glad it worked. You wouldn't happen to know why the purge canister valve sporadically ticks after the engine is warm? This was happening before as well. I actually replaced it thinking the old one was bad because of rust all over it. Anyway the new one does the tick as well.
 
I do not know the exact strategy of the purge system. I do know the engine vacuum pulls air through the canister, purging it of gas fumes and getting it ready to absorb more fumes the next time it's parked.

They have special time periods when they purge the canister. Usually the engine has to be warmed up. I would have thought it would have to be above idle, but not sure about that. The computer is programmed to purge the canister at certain times, or it can make the engine run rough and maybe even stall. If the engine is running ok, I do not think I would worry about it too much.
