93 Splash in SC, V8-Swap version

80s movie with Ally Sheedy. I can't remember if she was Stephanie or the robot. All I remember is I saw the movie at a drive in theater.
You're almost there.

I wonder what brand of cigarette this was.

And I removed these before any theives could notice a truck on jack stands. I was hoping to do compression checks on the engine today. But it's time to quit. I need to do a couple chores at mom's house and then cook dinner and clean up around here.

Center console is gone and all wiring harnesses are labeled. Overhead console is out, too.

Thought I was going to be rained out today. But it got nice and sunny this afternoon. After a bunch of errands and storm preparations, i worked on the Explorer. Harvested a door handle linkage rod for another member here. Went ahead and almost completely gutted the driver door. Then I took down the tire that was underneath as a spare. It's the one that the PO tore up when he ran off the road into some trees. That's a total loss. Then I removed the spark plugs, hoping to take compression readings. Found out I need an adapter for my compression test rig. Tests resume tomorrow. #8 spark plug was less than hand tight. It also has a gap of 0.083". #7 was tight but similar gap. These plugs hadn't been changed in a long time. Went ahead and removed coil packs and plug wires from the engine bay.

Plugs in order. #1 front left, #8 right rear.

Plugs dont look too bad. Wore out is good.

Plugs might be originals too...
Probably changed once, they're Autolites not Motorcraft, but yeah, been there a while. The porcelain isn't caked with oil goo from the looks of it so shouldn't be too bad.

Still haven't done compression checks. The adapter kit I bought last night didn't have what I need. I'll order something online. I did briefly look inside the cylinders with a borescope. They look good enough for me. Still able to see cross-hatching on all the walls. As long as compression numbers are good, I don't plan on taking heads off the engine.

Decided to start clearing out the engine bay, today.

6 has weak valve springs and or seal. unless the control rings are just a bit caked and stiff...

Ok. Thank you. Are we saying it is slightly oil fouled? Or is it soot? Just trying to learn.

What would your recommendation be? I haven't downloaded pictures from the borescope yet and I may not have the proper pictures. But I think I saw some carbon buildup in the top of one cylinder, maybe on the bottom of the head surface. I can look again in #6.

Teach me, oh Great One.

that is dependent on the psi test....if its within 15 percent its in the fawk it run it catagory.

look at the build up on the valves compared to the others. if its clearly leaking than consider changing them

that cam is a good truck cam, so springs and seals are not too bad to do with the heads on and that saves on gaskets and head bolts.

I'm with bobby there, no matter what I would do valve stem seals (I was going to recommend that no matter what the plugs looked like, my '98 has bad valve stem seals) and judging from my experience with my 250k 5L explorer that I rebuilt I would roll new bearings on the mains and rods while it's out, every bearing on mine (cam included) as showing wear. The valves on mine would have been fine but I ground them anyway since I had the capability...

Oh and I guarantee the valve cover gaskets are cooked from the exhaust manifolds
