Any new firearm purchases?

Can't rule out any wild cards, though. I'm kinda thinking about a .22LR / .22WMR convertible revolver, either a Heritage western style six-shooter or a North American Arms mini.

No dealing with the Heritage, but dad has had a Ruger Single 6 forever. Definitely a fun gun.

Dad and I both have Taurus 992s and they've been good if you'd be more interested in a double action. Don't shoot it much, but it's been good every time that I did. I don't use WMR much and most of the time that I use/carry a 22 it's for plinking or varmints (armadillos) during unting season. For both of those the semi auto Ruger 22/45 (6" Tac-Sol Paclite w/ MKIII 22/45 frame) is my usual go-to, either for accurate rapid fire, or with the silencer attached to not scare off bigger game.

Now that the weather is warming up I might pull out the 992 for snake/rat shot. I'd rather a larger caliber shot cartridge, but my only other revolver is a 44mag and can't (shouldn't) use them in it because of how the barrel is made. A 357 revolver is another item on my eventually list, and there will be shot cartridges on hand to use with it.

EDIT: Damn it, I really need to walk away from this thread. It's got me window shopping again. PSA has their AR-10 handguards in stock, so probably be ordering one of those soon.

I already have an H&R 925, but only have the .22WMR cylinder for it.

I've looked at the Ruger, and do like it.

I'm just a hard-core plinker. I don't hunt, I don't reload, the only things I kill is cans and time, so I'm just really into .22LR.

What center-fires I have I rarely shoot, except for 9mm.

And to be a really odd duck for the times, I only like old-school metal and wood arms. I don't really care for the black guns (although a couple are in the safe), and I don't own ANY polymer guns.

Ha-ha; yep, you're running with some real bad influences here.

I think everyone except an unnamed person in this thread probably has a 10/22. Even my dad has one.

All the gun people on youtube mention having one because they have so much aftermarket support. I never knew that when we got ours. It was 159 bucks at a gun show with an archangel kit in it and its the 100 or whatever anniversary edition

Well am I your unnamed person?

I technically do not own a 10/22. I own a T/CR-22. A now discontuinued Thompson Center clone of the 10/22. It isn't a Ruger 10/22, but practically all of the parts are interchangeable with one. By all reviews at the time it was a better rifle for the money, and from what I've seen they were correct. IMO it shoots better than the comparable 10/22 models, or at least the ones I've had my hands on. At the very least it came out of the box with all of the parts that I would have had to change on a 10/22 to make it what I wanted, for about the same price as the base 10/22. Considering the price of customization, I was actually considering a custom 10/22 build from a bare reciever before finding the T/Cs. After handling it and comparing it to his 10/22, dad went and bought one too.

Still wouldn't mind doing the ground up build of one without using an original Ruger part. I'd probably do a charger TD build and kit it out to be used as either a pistol or rifle, maybe even a shorty if I apply for a stamp (or the rules change). That said I've already got a few semi-auto 22s, including a SBRed AR-22 (thanks ATF brace ban), so difficult to justify building another 10/22 type rifle.

I've got both, as well as an 835. Might as well be the same. The 88 has a few cost cutting points, but nothing that affects the function. Mostly a slightly cheaper looking finish, cheaper furniture (allegedly), and the safety int he trigger guard instead of the tang.

The 835 was actually my first shotgun. Dad bought it for turkey hunting, shot 3.5" magnum shell out of it one time, then swore he'd never shoot a magnum shell again. Don;t recally if he already had the 500 or if he bought it then, but he went back to using it for hunting because it was lighter and didn;t need the shell capacity. After I moved out he gave it to me, I popped a 500 18.5" security barrel on it and kept it in the corner for years.

Eventually with my fiddling around with gun stuff I decided to pick up a 88 and changed out the stocks and put the 18.5" barrel on it. Returned the 835 to stock, it's been a safe queen since since I don't bird hunt. At that point I had the original stocks and barrel lying around for the 88, so I bought a bare 500 reciever off gunbroker, scrounged up a trigger, and bolt, and assembled a complete 500 from the parts. Still want to do some more modifications on those two, but they mostly stay tucked away at each end of the house just in case.

Now I'm going to leave this thread before y'all encourage me to buy something else. I've already got several with less than 100 rounds and have only fired two shots in the last two years. Both times during hunting season at deer (and both were kills). A few things I want to buy or build, but not going to do it until I get some other projects done and time spent at the range.

My original Maverick 88 came to me with the short barrel and a pistol grip. It now has a 26" barrel with screw in chokes and a normal stock for bird hunting. I still have the short barrel somewhere and I should build another home defense shotgun if I find a receiver for it.

Those magnum shells are terrible for recoil. I shot some 3.5" turkey loads out of my 88 and a single shot Stoeger. My shoulder was done after about 5 rounds. They just hurt...I am not a gun wimp by any means, I'll shoot anything but those are just not cool. Kind of wondering what they would be tolerable in, I'd think they would be hard on most semi auto's.

I decided if I'm hunting turkeys I will be using a .22 or maybe a mild buck shot load. I read where using #9 shot in 410 is very effective at fairly close range too.

Regarding those Heritage Rough Rider pistols: Those are a great buy but don't spend more than about $150. I bought a brand new one from a dealer for $89 a couple years ago. Be aware that the frame is painted, not blued, and if you use carb cleaner or something like that to clean it, it'll take the paint off. Those new Ruger .22 revolvers for about ~$200 are MUCH nicer, however.

Thanks for that input. I'm picking up a shotgun this afternoon, then I'm going to take a breather for a while.

Yeah, the Heritage line does have some "less than ideal" things about them, but they've got a lot of "bang for the buck", so to speak and pun intended.

I'm thinking, though, that eventually I'll opt for something nicer for a convertible .22 revolver. Something in stainless has its attractions for one that I'll be lugging around the property a lot.

@Uncle Gump - can't wait to see what you got, and what you think of it.

I like single shot arms; it makes you think about each and every shot.

If you can score one for under $150 w/ the 22WMR cylinder, and you don't mind a pistol that won't look nice after you carry it around for a while, they are perfect.

In my mind spending any more than that justifies jumping up to the Ruger Wrangler, the fit & finish is just much better overall.

I haven't gotten anything new to me since the auction I got a bolt action .22 in the spring/winter sometime...

In case anyone needs to make an impulse purchase grab a gun has the Kel Tek P17 .22 pistol for $155 I think for this weekend only... cheapest I've ever seen. It's a decent little unit...

Some may recall seeing that my dad passed this summer. I hadn't bought any new firearms since getting a PSA AR-10 a year or so ago, and wasn't going to buy anything else until I had a chance to actyually use some of what I already had. Then with his passing I definitely wasn't going to get anything until I had a chance to see what I was getting from him and, again, had a chance to get out and shoot all of it some. There are a few guns in hgis collection that I want to end up with, and one in particular that I'd called dibbs on that being a S&W 69 Combat Magnum 44 that the family had bought him as a christmas present several years ago.

Honestly it wasn't so much that I had any particular attachment to that gun, but I wanted a 44 wheel gun to carry in the woods with snake shot. What I really wanted was the Ruger NM Super Blackhawk that I always remembered him carrying when huntying when I was little. Unfortunately that gun and a few others were stolen during a break-in many years ago. Finding a used replacement built the same wasn't happening, both new and used models were outside my price range.

Well Thursday I stopped by a LGS to find some shot cartridges for the S&W to use this season. Don't normally go in there, they have a great selection, but their prices are usually way too high. If anyone was going to have shot cartridges for 44, this should have been the place. Well I was wrong about that, but this beauty was sitting in the used gun case.

7.5" barrel, blued, looks to be all original. From appearances it is entirely possibly it was only ever test fired at the manufacturer and dealer. Serial number puts it around a 1983 production, dad's was about an 85. Practically identical to the one that was stolen. I had them pull a S&W 69 out of the case and handled the two side by side, there was just something right about Ruger that the 69 couldn't match. Unlike previous similar finds, it was exactly what I was looking for with a price I could stomach.

Definitely an emotional impulse purchase that I probably shouldn't have made, but I haven't stopped smiling since. Just wish he was still here to have seen it. Now I just need to find a companion Winchester or Marlin lever action. I'll use dad's Ruger 96/44 for now, but he didn't even use it much because of how stout it is.

As for the S&W, I'm withdrawing dibbs on it. This SBH isn't my only 44, I also have a 6.4" barreled Taurus Tracker 44 that was stolen at the same time as dad's SBH, but got lucky and it was recovered and returned years later. Unfortunately it has a "compensator" built into the barrel so shot cartridges aren't recommended, and that's why I was laying claim to the S&W. My brother in law has expressed interest in the S&W, but already knew that I wanted it for the reasons stated. He was part of the family and in on gifting it to dad, so I think that he would appreciate receiving it.

Congratulations; that is a NICE one.

You'll be glad that you got it. Prices sure as hell ain't going down, and you're better off getting something that you like, when you find it, that you can then enjoy. Believe me; you end up reaching an age, where you figure out that if you don't get something you've always wanted, you might as well give up on wanting it.

Can't beat a Ruger revolver; that is a quality firearm for sure.

I ended up getting a Rough Rider. It's a fun toy that I can play with, and for the money I don't have to worry about messing it up.

Even though I got it with the factory wood grips, I just couldn't stand the feel of it; so I put some much nicer aftermarket oversize grips on it. Makes it feel much better; more like the H&R I've had forever. Now I can beat this one up whenever I feel like it, and save the wear tear on my old reliable one.

Yep, that's a nice looking one too.

There also happens to be a Ruger Single Six .22 LR in dad's gun inventory. It's the same basic gun as the Super Blackhawk. slightly different grip frame and shorter barrel IIRC. That's probably why dad bought one or the other. He had one, liked the fit and function so he bought the other. Wasn't sure which way it was going to go, now I think I'm going to try to snag it and let them have some of the other 22lr that I'm not interested in. Also be interesting to pickup a 22 mag cylinder for it, this one came with LR only, but the single sixes should be interchangable.

I know I'm going to get the Marlin Golden Boy. My grandmother bought it for dad with the first paycheck she ever got. It's a 57/58 manufacture and he was born in 54. Not sure exactly when it was purchased for him, but it was a long time ago. He had a bunch of other 22s that I either have duplicates of or don't have much interest in. I'm sure that they'd be happy to get a few of those.

Interestingly enough that would give me a few matching sets. I've got the Taurus 44 mentioned previously, it's a stainless 6.5" barreled double action. I also have a Taurus 992, same basic gun except 22 lr/wmr and a 4" barrel, also instainless. Then picked up the Super Blackhawk 44 mag, 7.5" blued single action. The Single Six is it's 22lr blued single action little brother. Then I'll have the Ruger 44 lever action for now at least, and the Marlin 22 lever action.

As it stand they will all end up with my sister's family eventually anyway. I've got no wife or kids, so I really hope that my niece likes guns or at least ends up with a husband and kids that do. (trucks too for that matter) While we don't currently live close (that may change) we are close and sharing won't be an issue.

Gun sales fell below 1 million a month for the first time in 6 years. :(

Picked up a Swedish Mauser recently, just stuck it in the cabinet. Now I finally have an old milsurp that hasn’t been bubbafied.

Still waiting on a keltec pr57 although I should just get a .22tcm barrel instead, no I should get both.

Its a lousy time to be a gun salesman, but this is typical of the political swing though. I've been either working in or learning about the industry for around 10 years. We've never had a more promising legal outlook on the future of firearms ownership though. I have a feeling within 5 years given the current legal climate and SCOTUS rulings, you'll see the NFA completely disolved, and possibly new MFG machineguns brought back. Regardless of the current political scene when that happens, its going to stimulate some buying activity. The only thing thats ever happened like that in my lifetime was the Clinton AW ban sunset. Nobody cared about ARs till someone behind a desk said we couldnt have them.

Not sure my most recent aquisition really counts? It was through a sales program at the last gun counter I worked at. I was awarded a Springfield M1A Loaded. I haven't really messed with it much but I will say that the one time I've shot it, its accuracy floored me. I hadn't shot irons since my high school competition days, but I was shooting 1" groups through the irons, up hill at 100 yards in a lousy, unstable sitting position and not really trying. PMC bronze; nothing special for ammo, but this thing likes it. Plans are to scope it, unitize the gasblock, glass bedding and a bit of other accurizing work. Maybe supress it down the road. First thing I'll likely do is shoot an elk with it so I can post something else in the "What's for dinner tonite" thread :D

Elk for dinner...

I'm watching!
