Any new firearm purchases?

Oooooo AKs are my jam! AOA has some good quality (albeit battlefield condition) romanian kits. A bit more coin for a polish. I've been itching to build one or three for myself for a good minute.
I saw a thread years ago on a former Russian that built a functioning AK out of a shovel, barrel, bolt and the internal receiver stuff. The receiver and stock were made from a D-handle square shovel and some blacksmith work… craziest thing I ever saw… thing worked so well the ATF came knocking…

I remember that article, it was hilarious. Despite the AFT attention its not illegal to do and never has been (federally; locally ymmv). In fact, with the right fees and papers you can essentially buy your 2a rights back from the fed and put the auto sear back in. Almost like purchasing protection from an organized crime ring but I digress.

Theres a lot of good builders out there you can send kits to. I'll be one of em once I get my new shop, house (to be built), business and life put back together.

Hoping for good black Friday sales from PSA so I can finish up my AR10. Need an upper. Gotta figure out what I wanna do for cal & length..

I coulda swore that last year they were making some sort of .40+ cal upper which would be sweet... but all they have right now is .308 and 6.5.

That's another that I'd like to get for some dumb reason. We had one. That was among the several guns that was stolen with dad's 44s. Honestly he got it cheap and it sucked to shoot. I'd actually bought the firing pin modification for it because it sat in the closet unused for years after I slam fired on dad once. He never got around to installing the kit before it was stolen, and I'm pretty sure I saw it still sitting on a shelf somewhere.

My dad had one when were kids, it was cool because with the bayonet it was so scary looking. He took it out one winter day to show it to us and the thing ran away. He was trying to get it to quit but it just slam fired its way thru a mag dump.

This was all pre-internet so dad wrote it off as being some variation of broke/general POS and traded it on for a new youth Mossberg 500 shotgun for me. He was very unhappy about it.

Pretty sure some cosmolene or similar gummed up the firing pin and there was nothing actually wrong with it.

If I wanted something like that in a 7.62x39, an AK would make a lot more sense. Or a CMMG Mutant (or similar) since I'm equipped for and familiar with the AR platform. Don't really see a need to add another caliber, it's hard enough to feel all I have now.

I built an AR to run 7.62x39. It is a fun rifle... much more fun when the stuff was cheap though.

While I have nothing against AKs and their variants, I'm more familiar and comfortable with AR platforms. I do have a AK based Chinese shotgun that I bought back when then Vice-President Biden told us to buy one. It runs fine and is fun to shoot. It's heavy for a shotgun and probably wasn't what then Vice-President Biden had in mind, but it was a shotgun!

The Mosin was gone...so I bought the Hi Power. Apparently the NICS system was completely offline yesterday evening so I had to wait till today to pick it up...

Re: SKS slam fires - that is almost certainly cosmoline or debris jamming the firing pin. Good rule of thumb with any semi auto especially is to completely strip it and clean everything before shooting it. The Yugo SKS I bought years ago was packed full everywhere. They are great rifles.

Good work! I need to look at it again and do some research on it. I don't know much about Hi Powers except for (1) they are cool as hell, (2) I have a FEG clone that I love shooting and (3) the SA-35 is REAL purdy. I figured it was a decent deal though. Grips would for sure have to go... the original wood style is my preference... guess I am just not really into pearl.

I’m in the same boat as far as the high-power education, all I can offer is an anecdote. A few weeks ago fella walked in looking for a handgun. The third one I put in his hand was an SA-35, the next thing he picked up was a pen to fill out a 4473. The price you listed is good in comparison to the one I sold.

It was actually when I was researching how to clean the gunk out of my Mosin that I learned about the SKS slamfire thing. Dad had had it awhile and it ran fine until then.

Early 90's, dad said the guy had a table full of them for like $50...

I might end up with the SA-35 too. They are the nicest looking handguns to come out in a long time and they just fit my hand perfectly.

Same here actually. I bought a bunch of Mosins before running across an SKS and was glad to have read about the slamfire deal before attempting to shoot it.

I miss the cheap Mosin days. Back when Southern Ohio Gun was in business, they would have Type 53's and M44's for $69 but they would get cheaper the more you ordered...so I would order like 3 at a time... and they were PACKED with cosmoline... so much so that I scraped it off and saved it and made a candle in a baby food jar. It is really stinky.

The Mosins were oddly satisfying to clean though, I really enjoyed that.

They were importing some Henry-Martini rifles a couple years ago, I wish I could have snagged one of those for the same experiance.

It would have been a lot of fun to have been in on the WWI/WWII surplus dumps...

Thats because they're just a reproduction Hi-power. Not a half bad MSRP price either, they typicay can be had new for 6ish hundred if you look around. Most of John Brownings designs fit us modern sized folk well. He was head and shoulders taller than everyone at the FN plant.

While I'm at home with bronchitis nerd talking about guns it occured to me I might as well start a build thread for my 87 XLT 4x on here. Can somebody please point me to the right directory? Is there a "Reader's Rides" or other such section I'm missing?

Build threads usually just go into the section for the year of your truck - for a 4x4 I would suggest this one:

There are a few other sections for 2wd mini truck type builds, 2019+ trucks, Explorers, Bronco II's etc but ^^^ that one seems like the best fit.

Make sure he gets face protection and not just safety glasses. Those plastic BBs can sting!
