Any bicycle enthusiasts?


my recumbent is a triple on the front and 9 on the back with it going from 11-27, i think. i changed the gears from touring gears to race gears since i rode with the local race team alot and i would topped out on some sprints. with the gears its got now, it tops out at 42mph so i could keep up with those guys
 
there used to only be 3 grades of components, entry, mid, and race. and that was from each company, shimano, campy, etc. now there is many tiers in each type of component for each type of bike and multiple per manufacturer. like the shimano road has 4 or 5 types and each type has multiple grades from entry, mid, high, race, etc.

you have to google the spread sheet on what you want to make sure you also get the proper length of derailleur to go with your shifters since they make short, long, and mid and some have different pull ratios so the shifters don't work with everything properly.

as you can guess, i found out the hard way when i broke my rear derailleur. race grade derailleurs are short while the others range from short, mid, and long. the shorter the derailleur, the faster it shifts when you click or turn the shifter.

When I was a kid I ran cornstalks thru the derailer on my old Murray. Totally mangled it. Called Murray and ordered another one. I dinked and dinked and could only get like three gears out of 7 to work on it. Called them again and they swore up and down it was right.

The new one was way shorter...

This was late 90's so no internet yet... so I tolerated riding my 9 speed to school until I saved up my pennies for a new walmart full suspension Mongoose D40... which I wouldn't mind reviving at some point. It needs a new rear wheel/axle.

Yeah, I think the tourer has 9 and the mountain bike 7. Both are triple rings in the front.

Now doing away with the triples up front is all the rage. Single up front and like 8 or 9 speeds in the rear.

The used Schwinn I had before I got the tourer had a 12-27, I think. It was definitely a faster bike but oh did it suck on the hill climbs!

My current bike is a 24spd, it has a huge range in gearing. Granny low is geared like a tractor, I haven't really had a need for most of the higher gears yet lol.

When I'm top form, I'm running through all of them. Granted, the highest ones tend to be on the down hill. Until I work up to that, I don't see the third ring much at all.

My mountain bike had been down for a long time. So, I have no idea where I will be at with it. It's also a different style of riding and I don't have a death wish. There is going to be some relearning with that bike.
 
My mountain tandem has 4 spds up front - 18, 28, 38 & 48t; and I think 11-38t 8spd on the rear. And we run out of gears low enough on the local trails.
It also has 210mm front/190mm rear discs...which aren't enough. (I've been working on dual 180s for the front). And currently has a tripe crown dh front fork.​
If you're brave enough, it's a hoot.​
I also have a road tandem - been over 80km/h on it.
 
dang, mountain tandem sounds rough
