How organized is your shop?

Rick wanted me to post here that he is doing well after the setback. The sudden shock of actually assessing the shed of miracles was too much, and he lapsed in his therapy. He muttered things in moments of consciousness. Why get rid of the Volkswagen beetle parts, I’ve owned two in 50 years, I might need them. He started to say something about the Fiat X19, but he just trailed off with a glazed look. His mother, who went through the depression, taught him to save every dish soap bottle, peanut can, and broom handle since college. Then something about since the garage was out back, he could probably easily get two cars in it if he got a good starting run from the street. Then he started to drool, and zoned out again…

I can spend hours cleaning my shop and 5 minutes until disaster. Getting ready to go get it organized again so I can work in it this weekend. I have two friends, and their shop is always show room quality. One could organize the city dump and make it useable.

When doing small projects, I almost never put anything away when I'm done. Just leave it on the table when last used.

Before and during larger projects I will clean up before I start and mostly clean up when done for the day.

Mostly it's somewhere between cluttered and messy.

Also, the bottom 2 feet around three sides of the garage need to be cut out and replaced since they are completely rotted away. Garage is held up by temporary 4x4 wall setup inside the garage. That takes up a lot of useable space and also lets water, dirt, leaves, ect blow in.

So it sounds like the messy shops are more common...

I got my disaster shed cleaned up quite a bit over the weekend. I had two generators and a rototiller that needed carburetor work so those are done now, one generator and the tiller are sold, and I also got a bunch of freebie stuff cleaned up & put away. Main motivation was some other boxes of yard sale junk I bought... namely two boxes of black pipe, brass pipe & copper fittings that needed to be sorted - figured I might as well start there and then put away everything else.

Big shop is a mess again, I had to get the plasma table out to cut some brackets for my 3 link. Every time I need that, I have 10 other things to move out of the way. I wish I had a dedicated spot for it.

My tools are cleaned and put away at the end of every day. If I had to hunt for a tool it would piss me off, best way to avoid that is to put them away.
There's no such thing as OCD, that's just what the slobs call it.

Mine is a mess, tools are put away but workbench seems to be a catch-all. one bay has the equinox in it, middle has the wheel horse/tiller & the gator, other end bay has all 3 mowers in it, the table saw, air compressor & the long workbench. In one front corner is a moped I bought several years back, need a special tool to pull the flywheel so new clutch weights can be installed. Tractor has its own storage beside the garage, a tarped up dog kennel. Can drip oil all it wants there. Its worse when Im on a project, tools everywhere then. I swear sometimes putting stuff back away takes longer then the actual project sometimes.

Most of my stuff is in layers --- but I know which layer holds the tool that I need.

With my luck, it would always be the bottom layer.

Stole this topic from another forum. How organized is your garage/shop? Not at your work, at home.

Clean- tools put away after use, projects in an orderly fashion, swept up and brushed off work area
Cluttered- Tools out, multiple projects stuff a little mixed up, shavings and sawdust around the place for a bit
Messy- looks like a bomb went off, more time looking for something than working

I think I'm somewhere between clean and cluttered in the main shop. I can't stand working in a mess... I will often start my day/evening of work on a project by picking up or sweeping. Some stuff just has to stay out though for a project to be worked on.

The shed where I do my woodworking, small engine repair and storing outdoor equipment is usually pretty bad. Tools and parts often get pushed into piles and it's pretty cluttered. It's kind of a catch all for smaller projects and stuff like stacks of wood so that doesn't help.

i have a 19 year old.....and have been home less than a year the last 9.

a fuggin hurricane would have left it better.

Do you think that confusion over where your tools are and what’s in your shop has had an effect on the repair and upgrade results on your Ranger?

Mine are not just in layers. With my engineering degree, and with the family real estate spread out all over the place, and frankly just because I’m older than most of you and I’ve been doing it longer, my tools and supplies are not only in layers, they radiate out from the workbench in three dimensions, radiate from the garage, and even from the property, in geometric and random patterns most can’t even interpret.
