I want to turbo/ or supercharge my Ranger any suggestion ps I really just want more HP

hello I am asking if anyone knows any decent priced hp mods for a 3.0l Ranger and or a turbo or supercharger mods i just want a bit more pick up

A decent 5.0 swap has the ability to handle more though, a better transmission also accompanies it. And once there you actually gain active aftermarket support.

Whipple made a supercharger kit for the 3.0, you could buy a couple donor 5.0 Explorers for the price of a kit once you track one down.

Yeah, a 5.0 in stock form is slightly underwhelming for performance. Think it’s somewhere around 220hp. I’ve done a little to mine and I intend to do some more, but there is a lot of work and money involved to produce real power with that swap. There are better options.

That said, a 5.0 is a solid base, in some years of Ranger it is a relatively simple swap, and nothing sounds like a V-8.

A turbo 3.0 with 5-7psi would probably be pretty fun and relatively simple and cheap to do. My understanding is that a stock computer should be able to handle that. I’m thinking when I get around to fixing my 3.0 Ranger, that is likely what is going to happen.

If you are really trying to make power, a 2.3 Ecoboost swap with the 10 speed automatic and some things like upgrading the turbos and stuff will get you modern and making bigger HP numbers.

Explorer is around 220.

IMO they would have been a great stock power level for a Ranger (or at least my first gen) Torque isn't really that far off from an Ecoboost either.

Really? I was under the impression that adding any forced air required some form of custom tuning (I guess that's possible with an 03 PCM?) or a new PCM.

I’ve seen a number of people claiming that they run 5-10 psi turbo or supercharger on a stock computer. Now, I’m sure that custom tuning can get the best out of mods and the more stuff you do and higher boost numbers the more a tune will help.

I’ve been told that 5psi feels like you took about 500# out of the bed

Check yourube. There is a dude that turbocharged his 3.0 and ran it up to somw crazy boost numbers, trying to see where it would die.


He started with 5psi and a stock computer snd it ran fine. Its a yellow ranger

the biggest issue I would think would be either cost if you just want to buy it or how unicorn it would be if you want to scour junkyards hunting for it.

So, the thing with superchargers is that they are not as common as turbos in the junkyard and you have to replace/fabricate an intake. To the best of my knowledge, nobody makes a pre-made intake for a supercharger on an RBV anymore, except maybe for the 5.0 motor. A turbo you can plumb into your stock intake.

They are indeed an option, but considering the challenges involved, a turbo may be simpler.

Totally understood and agreed, I knew they were no longer making new.... the more I think about it, the more I think I would advise the PO to swap to a 4.0 (or sell this ranger and get a 4.0)... or even a little highly moddable car instead of a pickup..

That and there are not many people wanting to put a $8k supercharger kit onto a $2 pickup to gain 50-100hp...

Even in their heyday the Whipple kits were never common or cheap.
