California on fire...

No offense, but an earthquake could break off Washington, Oregon, and California fron the continental USA and they could become their own country and I wouldn't care.

Texas has had a border problem that has gotten worse over the past few years. They continue to build a wall and man the border with Police and National Guard, but they're in constant conflict with the federal government trying to secure it.

OR and WA are on the North American Plate. Most of California is as well. That portion west of the San Andreas Fault is sliding north. As plate tectonics go, eventually Los Angeles will be just west of San Francisco.

The real reason we have an problem with the border is because it is seen as a source of cheap labor by those who don't want to pay people.

Im thinking we might just want to keep the topic focused on the fire.

That sounds good to me. I was going to grill some some chicken, but the tank ran out of propane. So, no fire.

Do you know how much of a disappointment it is when that happens?

I use Kingsford...

You don’t keep a few spares around? I think I have 4 or 5 of the 20# grill tanks…

No, but I keep telling myself I should pick up an extra one. I need to order a few parts for the grill too.
I found a couple old tanks on my property and found that even though they didn’t have the right valve and one had a leak, tank exchange places don’t care, they will swap them right out. Turned out to be a cheap way to get a good tank. The. I just take them to Tractor Supply or one of the other propane dealers for refills until the tank is out of date, then just exchange again. Cheapest way to do it. I put over 60# of propane through my flat top last year…

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!

So, charcoal is good, actually wood fired is the best. My only problem with that is neither of those are as portable as propane. I do a ton of cooking off my tailgate. Very little of that is at a camp site or at home and even a lot of that I just need to get stuff cooked quick. I do want a good wood fired cooking setup at my property when I get stuff more squared away there and I have plans on a charcoal pig roaster…

I see them abandoned when I go camping. I never thought of picking one up because I'm usually good about keeping mine topped off.

I never really thought about it until I came across a guy who worked for a major propane company that did tank exchanges. He said they drain anything left in the tanks, pull the valves, then sort the tanks based on if they look like they could pass inspection or not. They go through hundreds of tanks a day like that so they don’t worry about where the tanks came from. They sandblast, paint and pressure test before screwing a new valve in, doing a fill and shipping it right back out the door. And they are doing all of that for less than it would cost you to have a tank re-certified, plus throwing in a valve, paint, and 15# of propane.

I have a bunch of trees that are always dropping branches, I get a branch that is the right size and supplement charcoal with chunks. Adds a lot more flavor.

My pear tree is my favorite to use, granted it is also my only fruit tree.

I knew someone who had a job doing that. He hated his job.

I've done that myself, now I have 4 almost brand new tanks that I just have refilled at the co-op.
