Freeze plugs 1990 2.9

My freeze plugs are going bad I have replaced a few of them now i need to replace the one on the head thats on the drivers side against the fire wall. can it be replaced without taking the head off?

With a rubber one.
 
Yes I will use a rubber one, but can you get the metal out of the head without taken the head off the motor, there is not much room in between the head and the firewall to get the metal plug out.
