My tail gate liner bolts i bought are to long so i would like to buy some other bolts that are shorter and look better.

I have the factory 2002 ford ranger bed liner and tail gate liner if that helps at all.

take a bolt to a local hardware store and match it? shorter of course.

But i don't want a regular hard ware store bolt -

I want a actual automotive bolt =)

Hardware stores often have a automotive bolt section...

I am the type of guy that likes to buy automotive parts from a auto store =)

Another option if you can't find what you want in a store is to put the tip of the bolt in the Chuck of a drill so that the bolt sticks out just a hair longer than you want it to. Put a hack saw blade in a work bench vise and run the drill and screw against the blade.

Be ready to chase the screw.

When you find it, it will look nicely machined like it was from the factory.

Do some practice screws first

I would try that but under the 8 hex heads there is like under or around 1/2 inch of smooth metal before the threaded bottom of the bolts and thats why the bolts will not fit into the 8 holes on the inside of my tail gate so all 8 of my hex bolts stick out maybe 1/2 inch up above my tail gate liner.

For an F-150 tailgate cover those screws are not available separate from the tailgate cover.

But i don't need 8 hex bolts for a F-150 tailgate cover - I need 8 hex bolts for my 2002 Ranger tailgate cover

A bolt is a bolt, it doesn't know if it is being used for automotive or not.

Sounds like he needs the weird ones with a shoulder on them.

I tried using normal ones on my F-150, they worked loose.

A bolt and a washer works fine, I have had them in my tailgate for years.

You need to tell my tailgate that, they only stayed for a couple months.

Isn't that what locktite red id for - fixing bolts that want to escape?

Being a salt belt victim.. I understand wanting to use "real" bolts. Unless they're stainless.. hardware store bolts always seem to dissolve in a few years tops. OE bolts are definitely worth the trouble & cost to aquire in a lot of cases IMO.
