More power over what can be done with a good tune-up, and I’m talking plugs, wires, oxygen sensors if they’re over 10 years old, fuel filter, air filter, transmission filter and fluid if an automatic (I would also do a shift kit if it’s an auto and tighten the bands), is going to require a bigger motor, a turbo, or a gear change in the axles depending on what exactly you’re after.

Is your truck a 2300?

I would look at your axle's diff ratio. That is an easy way to make it feel faster and handle hills better

Yes B2300. Gear change need to look into, and possibly turbo. Just no down time. And I do the maintanace on truck semi religiously, it's my work truck, so she makes me money! Changed tires and rims a few years ago, I'm sure that is one of my culperates. When doing 65 mph on speedo, GPS says we're cruising at 75.
The down time for the turbo, plus be first time to mess with one would be a problem. I've had the truck for over 16 yrs, got it from my in laws. Great reliable truck. It's the perfect high for my maintanace/ instalation job. Short to the ground. It the highways and hills that kill the ride. Between Phoenix and Flagg, hills get me down to 3rd in manual. I'll look into what ratio I got current and get back with this.

Gear swap will be eaisest and fastest and probably cheapest for more ass. Espicially since youre 2wd

Find the axle you want in a junkyard, unbolt it, drag it home, unbolt yours, unhook driveshaft and braking bits....roll the new one in, reattach stuff and go.

With a 4 cylinder id be aiming for a 4.10.

Truthfully, I'd go for 4.56s with a 4cyl.

I went from an open 3.73 to a LSD with 4.10s in my old 2010 and while the improvement was nice with 30" tires.... considering all the money I spent... Definitely regretted not going full ham.

So your a 3.0 with 4.10's huh? That means you might stay close enough behind my 3.45 geared 2.9 to see the plate number.

4.10’s- with stock tires, my ‘94 came with 3.45’s, way too steep with even 14” tires, 4.10’s made all the difference. Biggest tire I ran was a 235/75/15. got 21 mpg at best. best overall tire size for towing was the 225/70/15’s.

Probably impossible for all I know.. but I'd say buying a set of gears and paying for install would be the better way to go than junkyard diving for a 4.10 axle imo.

4.10 shouldn't be particularly hard to find in a yard. If someone is up for a little searching, that's the way I'd recommend. 4.56 would be very rare (I can't remember if it was used in any factory configurations at all).

4.10s could be found 'reasonably' easily in a wrecking yard..

With the tires under that truck, the 3.73s (only ratio available in Mazda B2300 with manual) would be more like 3.23s. And OP would need at least 4.30s to get back to stock - Ford/Yukon sell them aftermarket, you'd never find them in a yard...

4.56s would get the truck a little better than stock; they are a unicorn possiblity in a yard (i.e. they are supposed to exist, I've just never seen them; car-part.com lists lots, but when you look at the fine print they are actually 3.73s or 4.10s)

New gears are...expensive... in a 30 year old truck. $250 for just the gears, plus shipping and double that for install if you can't do it yourself.

Move the air horns under the hood, tidy up the rack, and replace oversize tires with stock and performance with improve noticeably.

Didnt FX4 Lvl2's run 4.56? But itd be rare as dino shit to find

4.10’s arent too hard to find in a jy, The axle I sourced was in a ‘98 2.5 2wd shortbed with automatic transmission.
