What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Tweaked the alignment and rotated the tires for about 300 odd miles of driving tomorrow thats not all for pleasure.

(Update on the hub o-ring: I;m not satisfied with the fit and I will keep searching for a better one and update the post)

Intermittent brake growl from drivers front like the caliper isn't putting full force on the rotor. I just put new everything on the front and rear brakes except calipers and rear wheel cylinders. Last time I did the brakes before, I replaced all of that. I'm thinking a bad caliper or possibly the ABS module or master cylinder. It's so weird. It doesn't happen all the time and it comes and goes. I've looked over all the brakes and I can't find nothing wrong anywhere at all. The booster does leak down vacuum when the truck sits for a couple of hours. I think it maybe the check valve for the vacuum line.

Worked on the F350 tonight, dang near ran out of parts! Got the transfer case in (even plugged in the reverse switch and T case switch wires and hooked up the linkage!), front driveline on, T case skid plate on, rear driveshaft installed, carrier bearing bolted up... all that's left is filling the transmission and T case with fluid, bolt the shifter on (easier to fill the transmission from the top) and check to see if I know where the main fuel leak is in the valley...

What year? Gas or diesel?

I've got a leak in the valley on my '00 7.3L. I'm pretty certain it isn't fuel though. I thought it was at first because the truck is hard to start after sitting a few days. Now, from the way it acts, I'm almost positive that it is my HPOP reservoir leaking down. Basically leaks empty after a few days so no oil to pressurize the injectors when trying to start. Haven't found the actual leak yet though.

It's a '97 Diesel, I changed the fuel pump in a rest area a few years ago and I think the banjo bolt needs tightening... if I were smart I would have done that when I did the turbo last year but I forgot when it was apart...

If it's an oil leak up there and not coming from the HPOP gasket or that area then it's probably turbo pedestal O rings, not the most fun and I would recommend a set of 12pt 1/4" drive and 3/8" drive wobbly sockets to do the job... The common fuel leaks in the valley are the two hoses going between the fuel bowl and fuel pump...

Fired this up for a minute today. Already missed one event because of a medical(eye) problem but it sure was good to hear that ancient Crane cam through open fenderwell headers. REALLY LOUD inside the garage........

Couldn't race but I did spend the weekend being useful. That's me parked next to the ambulance with my truck's box packed with jack, stands, wheel dollies, grease sweep, rags, gunwash, traction compound, brooms. shovels. fire extinguishers, tow strap, etc. BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE!!!

I fixed the brake issue I mentioned earlier in the thread. The place where I get my rotors turned can't get all the way against the raised section of the brake rotor center hub. One of my pads was bonded slightly off center and was rubbing the ring left behind near the center hub. All I did was file a couple thousandsths off the pad material where it rubs to make it stop grinding. I put less than a 1000 miles on the truck last year taking off bags of trash and recyclables. I think my fix will be good enough.

Well, I had set out intending to knock out the rear brakes on mom’s Explorer (clean and lube the slide pins to be more precise and fill the rear diff). Then I was thinking of taking a quick look at mom’s Murano since it’s got a vibration. Instead dad was absolutely insistent on working on his Ranger and of course I was required to help a bunch.

The little bit of time I got to spend on other things was a bit of unloading some stuff from the F-150 and choptop, unloading mom’s Murano, swapped the order in the driveway (put the F-150 in front of the choptop), poked at a couple things for both trucks and the like. Maybe tomorrow I can get the Explorer knocked out and dig into the choptop.

I’m surprised they let you have Jack that close to the action….

Still working on the F350, turns out the biggest wrench I had was a 1 1/8" so couldn't check the banjo bolt... but I did do an oil change and filled the trans and T case, only took 4.5 gallons of fluid between that...

That said, it's out of the shop, runs and drives fine, the clutch is buttery smooth for now, it seems quieter, will drive it to work tomorrow, gotta get some miles on it then change the fluid before the trip in just over a week...

So, with my health improving, I’ve gotten much more ambitious about cleaning up my house and property from the neglect, caused by my injury and illness over the last 10 years. And now I’ve committed to go to the Carlisle truck nationals. So last Saturday, I went to the wholesale nursery and bought a dozen bushes I plan to install as I fix some drainage problems that developed. My Ranger project was to move the fleet around so I could get the Road Ranger’s trailer in front of the garage where the welder is to get that ready for the trip.

Of course, life intervened, and I’ve had to do a little more real estate than I usually do in my semi retired state, but the biggest problem I have is that overnight it shot up to the low 90s, and it’s supposed to be in the mid to upper 90s for the next few days. Well, I’m fat and old, so I’m pretty much toast outside above the low 80s, especially if there’s high humidity which is common.

The plan on the landscaping is to get a few laborers from the front of Home Depot and let them do the fun stuff, and I’ll work on the trailer in the morning and in the evening. Too bad you can’t pick up metal men and welders the same way.

I’m very thankful to The Man Upstairs for helping me regain my health and stamina so I can do this at all. I couldn’t do it a year ago.

I’m still really looking forward to the trip.!

Is the RoadRanger coming to Carlisle? I want to see that thing in person.

Maybe I'm reading wrong, or missing an implied part of the message. If you changed the oil, topped off the trans and t case, what fluids could you need to change in a week?
