Hi all,

I've browsed the forum for several years, and I thought I'd join now as I need advice. I have a 2006 Ranger Sport 2wd with the 4.0 L V6. I was doing my normal oil change and I noticed some oil leakage from the bottom oil pan. I thought that I would just need to replace the gasket. When I pulled the pan I found bits of yellow plastic in the pan that I believe are from the timing chain guide. I feel as though it would make more sense to just get a new engine than to pull the current one and fix the parts as it would almost cost the same. My Ranger has 180,000 miles on it so that's a factor as well. What do y'all suggest I do? Thanks.

Hi. Welcome to TRS.
I would try to get some quotes for both options and go from there. Are you going to do the work or have a shop do it? If you’re able to do the work, then it’s just a comparison of parts prices.

Welcome to the site.

Hey Steve, welcome to TRS.
Go for 380,000!
That's about where I'm at
But then I think most of my hard driving days are behind me

How big were those TimingGuide brokens?
Do you have any Death\DieselRattle, either Constant or just momentary with a ColdStart?
Have you owned this 2006 since new & have you done 5kMile\6Mths Oil+FilterChanges;
if not then you can safely assume they were not done by previous owners?
Have the 2 OilPressurized TimingTensioners ever been renewed; should be done every 100kMiles\12Yrs?
If broken bits are very small & no rattle,
it's possible the guides have been that way a long time & are not creating a problem;
doesn't mean they can't go at any time, but that can be said for new parts.
3 Choices:
* if no rattle, renew the Tensioners & continue with 5kMile\6Mth Oil+FilterChanges
* if rattle, run her t'til she blows
* rattle or no rattle, rebuild\new engine
