What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

That rag covering roughly half the radiator is PERFECT for the winter apparently... last late summer/fall I flushed the cooling system, put in a new Motorcraft thermostat and switched the heater core hoses to try that which helped but not much... being a Lima under 50F the temp needle barely moved so barely staying in closed loop fuel control most likely since the fuel mileage drops almost 10% when it's cold...

Anywho, this morning it was about 35F, the temp gauge went up to where it should be within about 4 miles and I had heat all the way to work and home... I'd pull the fan but then there's times like my way home tonight where it took 20 minutes to drive 3 miles... all in 45-55mph zone... stupid rubber neckers...

Noticed my F-150 seemed to start a little slower than normal leaving work tonight. Try as I might I can not find any sort of ammeter or voltmeter display. Go get the kid at daycare and it just engages the starter and clicks like nuts.

So I rally the troops and get a jump. My jump pack is conveniently still in my wife's car from our Kansas trip. Factory 2016 battery so I can't really complain too much. Get it home and I have little faith it will start in the morning.

But wait, there is another!

Wait for my wife to get home and I check into waking up the Ranger after it's three week sleep. Coolant is good, oil is good, fuel is just above the red line, great.

15* out but not much to lose. Let the pump run a bit, truck rolls over great and tries to fire. Remember the pump will pull down when the bowls are full so I let it do so. Pump the pedal once and the truck fires off like I just parked it. Did a lap around my cornfield to top off the battery.

Popped the covers off the daylighters for deer (yay) and I think it I might not have to walk to town in the morning after all.

Found out that a Meguiar's headlight restore kit works really nice. Have good, bright lights now.

Also found out that a previous owner installed the drivers headlight wrong.

Tip: Having both headlights pointing in the same general direction is a good thing.

I like the ease of removing headlight assemblies in Rangers, but you have to be alert when you reinstall them. It's easy for the two long metal retainers to miss the pins on the bottom of the assembly.

I like the ease of removing headlight assemblies in Rangers, but you have to be alert when you reinstall them. It's easy for the two long metal retainers to miss the pins on the bottom of the assembly.

Yep. I have to readjust the driver’s side head light due to that very reason. When the auto body shop repaired the 2011, they did that exact thing. So, it points a little high and left. On the plus side, with it getting dark sooner, I have more opportunities to get it done. I just have to look up the specs to make sure I get it right and get it done.

While 30 degree weather and snow is a normal thing here in the winter, this crap in mid November is unacceptable. All my winter prep is timed for normal weather for this region. Now I have to hope the dirt doesn’t freeze over or thaws enough to pound the anchor stakes in for the carport. That and I still have dirt amendment to do in the garden. Tough to do when the dirt is frozen or a heavy, sopping mess because it’s still wet.

Whoever removed the headlight switched the non moving mount with the adjusting mount. It can be done. Something to pay attention to if one needs to replace the lens.
