I do have a serious question....

WTF is the point in drive by wire? Seriously. What does it fix? Why was it introduced? Was it to let the ECM control the throttle for trac control or something?

I literally see zero point in it.

and traction control? Is there ever a situation where its benificial? If so i aint found it. The wifes escape has it and every time ive gotten it stuck i shut that shit off and it comes right out.
 
I know in aircraft, it’s being done to save weight.

In vehicles, I don’t know what the point is. A throttle cable doesn’t weight all that much like flight control cables do.

It has to have to do with fuel efficiency and control or something along those lines. More precision since there would be no cable slop or stretch?
 



Just to point out that polls should be taken with a grain of salt: All 3 of these polled around 1000 Americans (actually it's just two since the last two links discuss data from the same poll). I don't think they tried to randomize in any way, but even if they did, that's not a large enough sample size to be representative of Americans as a whole.
 
Drive by wire helps with fuel economy for sure.

They can use the use the computer to make the throttle less responsive, in turn, preventing you from accelerating too quickly. They can also limit the it so you can't go WOT. This is why you see, Drive/Eco/Sport modes in new auto cars. Makes the throttle more and less responsive to your inputs.

The traction control in my wife's car tries to solve every problem by making the car punch itself in the face.

They should have a soundtrack of Nedry from Jurassic Park saying "nuh uh uh you didn't push the magic button! " repeatedly as the traction control pulls power away every few seconds.

I am used to my old junk where I say jump and they say "how high sir".

Doeant look like there’s any benefit gained to me. Same type throttle body so no fancy air flow advantages.

Agreed re traction control. Most of the time it makes me want to break things. Though my impression was the worst with early systems and slightly better with various vehicles as the years went by.

Oh, just like on the 6.2l F350, where it limits you to 40% of total throttle unless you're over 2400 rpm?

Thats bullshit. When i punch the throttle im punching it for a reason. I need to go, and go now.

My Mazda has the only sport mode that I’ve found actually does anything. It really hangs on to gears. Won’t drop below 2k if you’re moving.

And it has a kickdown switch on the throttle. It’s a physical detent at 90ish% throttle. Push past that and the engine (supposedly) gives you 100% along with a down shift if feasible. Probably more of a reminder to the driver not to go full throttle all the time.

My 2013 Challenger Sport mode is a blast. Stiffens the suspension massively, really helps at 140+

My first experiance was the car repeatedly trying to ditch itself as I tried to thrust vector my way back onto the road. It took like four porpoise maneuvers before it clicked what was going on.

Once I killed the TC and had more or less full control of the car it was no big deal.

I can't remember what vehicle it was that gave me my first distaste for TC. One of my ex wife's FWD cars most likely. I was pulling out onto a main highway (55mph) from a side street on a tiny patch of slush. In the middle of moderate acceleration, a brief burst of wheel slip caused it to flat out cut the power completely for a couple of seconds as I stared in horror at cars coming towards me. It eventually gave me the juice I needed to avoid death, but it sure got my attention!
