Finally have to pull the trans.

hoping... getting it over the first section, the OD, is the hard part. Then getting it into the groove is easier, or are they both just as hard?

.....find out in the morning.

Stupid mistake! I lubricated the ID, got it on and forgot to lubricate the OD. Peeled a hair off around the perimeter....tiny bit. Now get to pay for the one at Napa anyway.

I use RTV on the OD. Grease or oil on the inside. The part you peeled off may just be paint - maybe not a big deal, I have had that happen before. I just use the RTV because I feel it keeps the seal in place and can help seal it up a little better there.

I'd have to get the seal on quickly. I don't have much of an install tool. Might try a quarter of a 4" PVC next. I had used the side of a plastic handle moving around the clock to hammer it in. A part of the seal wouldn't set in. I removed it. Next seal....even the rtv works as a lubricant, un less it starts drying. I ruined this one.

....and removing it, I put a Burr on the outside edge of the retainer. I'll hit that lightly with 1000 grit Emory. Just the edge.

RTV takes a couple hours to cure at minimum... the 5-10 minutes you spend installing the seal will not matter, it won't be dry. Take your time, there is no rush.

I just spent 30 minutes trying to get the last bit of the seal in....so rtv would start drying in my 90 degree temp. Still didn't get it in. I'll try the last part, later. When I try to get a good whack on it the cross-member get in the way. I'm about to try my 2Lb sledge.

I have a lot of hammers, mallets...all have handles of at least 12", except one. One of my 2Lb sledges has a 10" handle. Every time I tried to use a little extra force with any other hammer, the end of the handle would hit the cross-member...or body or something. The short handled sledge worked. I was able to connect with the 4" piece of PVC to drive the last bit in.

There's what looks like a balance hole in the end of the crankshaft, and one in the new flywheel. Do I need to line them up, put them opposite, or does it matter at all?

Thanks

I'd be surprised if it's possible to put the flywheel on in the wrong orientation.

It has 6 equal bolt holes, no key way. What would make it only go on one way?

I strongly suspect those holes aren't actually equally spaced. On the 5.0, one hole is out of position just enough to force it to only line up one way.

This is a 2.3. Are you guessing? They look equal, I'll put my caliper on it and see. I've seen other 4 cylinders the same way. That's why I'm asking. I'll check in the morning. Maybe you're right.

The Haynes book says to mark the mating service so you can put it back to the same orientation. Says nothing about a NEW flywheel.
