I need to take the tire off to take to a tire shop to see if they can plug a leak, where is the best place to position the bottle jack?

Right under the shock absorber. BE CAREFUL

Try to do it in as level of ground as possible and preferably on cement. If on asphalt or gravel, put a board under the jack. The softer the ground, thicker the board should be and the larger a piece it should be. I use 3/4” plywood that is roughly 12”X12” for my jack stands in my gravel driveway. 1/2” thick and the board should be larger than the jack base on asphalt. It doesn’t take much to divot/dent asphalt on a hot day.

And chock the opposite axle wheels.

Under the axle tube next to or between the U-bolts is generally the best place for the jack at the rear axle (I think I recall there is also a label under the hood showing the places where to jack it from).

I just use this guy.
