If this is your work vehicle, and your livelihood depends on it, I would not mess around. If possible, scrap it and get something as reliable, useful, and cheap as possible (in that order) with a warranty. Maybe even get a crappy but bulletproof junker as a backup vehicle. Save the engine swaps for fun project time, if that's what you want to spend your spare time doing.

Vin matching to 2004 is not always what it sounds like. Though the walk around on it is what caused issues tuning. You can vin match as long as it readiness matches and passes tests it's fine


In NH...I don't remember the specifics.

Custom title....such as assembled/rebuilt...or Reconstructed...or composite vehicle or similar....depending on where you live....and sometimes exempt titling or new emissions matching can all work...and can be a shit ton of work to wade through. And net an uninsurable vehicle...well...not cheap to insure.

Those are the standard workarounds for the Darby system.

I should have explained in more detail, the OBD II test won't fail because of the VIN mismatch, the tech and facility doing the inspection will end up at a hearing at the DMV in Concord because it looks to the state like they inspected one vehicle with the Gordon Darby unit plugged into another one. If they're lucky their inspection license will be suspended, if not it will be permanently revoked. It's possible to get a state issued VIN for a street rod, rebuilt salvage vehicle, or home made trailer. They would never issue one for a 96 or newer OBD II vehicle with an engine swap.

I have not dealt directly with a NH swap. But have with similar states as far as legal structure.

The custom title is just that....your assigning that vin to that chassis...or construction....in this case...the vin of your pcm rather...will be matched to your custom title.

Just like many commercial vans or mobility vehicles will have a ford or Dodge powertrain....but be a plastic/composite critter on a custom chassis....with gm axles or some crazy shit. They use shelf parts...
