What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Yes, but I don't have smoke machine. Any suggestions?

Go get yourself a cigar, cover up the throttle body, light your stogie and puff it into the brake booster line. Or for around 30 bucks you can make a smoke machine from a paint can, a tiki torch wick, a propane regulator and some resistance wire. I'll try to find a DIY video, mine works great.

Or, if you’re suspecting it to be a vacuum line, start it up, pull the lines one by one then cover that vacuum port with a finger then rev the engine. Any improvement in acceleration will indicate that, that vacuum line has a leak.

I've never done the smoke machine testing... but I have used propane since the early 80's.

Old habits are hard to break... and it works really well.

I'm a lil nervous about introducing flammable gas near engine. Just remembered we have a smoke blower at work for hard to find sewer gas smells, im taking it home after work and see if I can try to get it to work for me, if not I'll pull out the propane torch, actually mine is MAP gas torch I assume it would work the same?

It does work. Sometimes not on pinhole leaks and does not work on the evap system though.

Map, propane... same difference for the intended purpose.

smoke test was a big ol fail! the smoke candles must have drawn moisture in our shop at work, only the fuses would ignite. moving onto propane, i saw no change in idle around any vacuum lines, base of injectors, intake gaskets, intake tube sensors, or anywhere else. also tried wd-40 at my brothers suggestion, no changes here other than a messy engine bay. put the scanner back on it now showing random misfire, in addition to egr, bank1, and bank2 lean. attempted data logging to view fuel trim, long term fuel trim bank 1 and 2 had a reading of 1.20-1.25

I found one... I finally found one... And for only $23 dollars!!!

I tore apart my front end to do ball joints, rusty mess and I have a radius arm that’s getting pretty thin. Havent gone about removing the old ball joints yet, this was my 2nd project of the day, The 1st project was putting a backup camera setup in the escape, it was a christmas present i had forgotten about but she didnt- so I started it about 10 am and finished up about 3. It works but im really not a fan, the best thing I can say about it is that it could be helpful lining up when I back up to a trailer. This setup uses a new mirror with a built in monitor, put it in reverse and you have a picture. First try of it I had the camera upside down. Hopefully she likes it, was a pain to put in.

I had one of those with the monitor in the mirror. I absolutely hated it. The camera wasn't as clear as the mirror so it just made things worse when the camera came on. I eventually just put a manual switch to turn the camera on when I wanted it so it didn't come on automatically when in reverse.
