Would like to know where the plug is on a 2.9L 4 x 4 to put the oil or grease into transmission .

Welcome to the site.

1st... You might want to remove the address on the location for you...

2nd.. manual transmission would take gear oil and an automatic would take ATF. guessing your year and manual it would be a FM-146. 4.8 qts of 80-90 gear lube oil.

+1 ^^^

Drive the vehicle first to warm up transmission oil, also put the new bottles of oil in the engine bay so they get warmed up as well, warm gear oil flows better, you need a bottle pump to refill, however some do pull out the shifter to refill, MAKE SURE you remove the Fill plug and check it often, you do not want to over fill the transmission

24mm drain plug should be on the bottom, on the pan, of transmission
Fill plug is on the drivers side, 1/2 way up

The 1983 to 1990 BW1350 transfer case uses DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid, NOT gear oil, if you want to change that as well, 2.5pints
Drain and fill plugs are both on the back side of transfer case

4.8 "pints" of 80W-90 gear oil, not quarts.
And do yourself a favor and DO NOT put GL-5 rated gear oil in your transmission. A GL-4 gear oil is what you want. GL-5 gear oil is not good for the syncros, and will prematurely wear out your transmission. There are some gear oils out there that claim they are GL-5 AND GL-4 compatible, but if the label says it is okay as a GL-5 gear oil don't use it.
Here's a link for some reasonably priced GL-4 85W-90 if you can't find any locally.
I think most people don't even know the difference between GL-5 and GL-4. I didn't, until I had gone through a couple transmissions in just a few years. GL-5 gear oil should not be used in a manual transmission with brass syncros, which the FM146 transmission in your Bronco 2 has.

Connie, I edited your profile so that your address is not visible. I did not think you wanted everyone to know where you live!

The fill plug is on one side of the transmission (driver's side if I remember right.) It looks like a large bolt.

You want to use GL-4 gear lube like everyone else has said, definitely NOT grease. I would try to use a synthetic gear lube if you can find one. GL-4 is kinda hard to find, synthetic will flow better at low temperatures and this is important for it to be easy to shift... I have 90w GL-4 in mine and it's VERY hard to shift in cold weather at first.

The GL-4 part is very important. Bottle labels and parts store goobers will say that GL-5 is backwards compatible, and for most things it is, but GL-5 has an additive that GL-4 doesn't and it eats brass. The synchronizer rings in your transmission, which keep it from grinding when you shift, are brass.

Then using GL-5 at the Pentagon could cause some real problems
Hopefully the terrorist don't read this thread

No, Obama took care of eating away the Pentagon Brass.

I thought '89 had a 50-50 chance of M5OD? Or is that '90 models?
