Curious about the real cost of a 6 to 8 swap

I dont think Ill be ready for an engine swap any time soon .. with a 92 I suppose I cant be sure.

But Im wondering what is the actual cost soup to nuts to swap to the 302 from a 4.0l opposed to a reman'd 4.0l which is what my 92 has.

More money to V8 swap probably. The newest 5.0s are nearly 20 years old. You'd want to rebuild it while it's out anyway, so you are paying for a reman engine either way and the V8 will cost more right there, plus you have to buy the engine before rebuilding it. Then for the 5.0 you need hardware, transmission/transfer case, wiring, computer, exhaust, steering possibly, driveshaft modifications. Then the downtime will be more because of the custom work to be done.

The V8 swap will cost more. I can't break it down into dollars and cents for you since I've done the exact same engine swap twice on my own stuff and the costs were wildly different each time.

Not really.

Most worthwhile 302s on the market are already EFI. Assuming the OP buys the engine wrapped in an Explorer he would already have the intake and injectors. To go buy a carb and intake would likely cost more than yanking an older harness and computer from a yard.

the answer is more, you will probably buy a donor vehicle, tear it apart, then see this and that, oh and while im here, that at all adds up to more. in my case i started with 500$ expo, somehow i have a 347 with some upgrades waiting to go in

Somewhere between $100 and $20k. "It depends" on a lot of details.

Yeah so given what adsm08 states; which is what I figured. For me, the remanufactured v6 would be a better solution when the time comes. If I want to go fast I can do that on my street glide 124 ci.

I put $3500 into my swap. $800-1200 for engine freshening and valve job on the heads. Trans, T/C, front drive shaft, engine mount, oil filter adapter, numerous gasket sets, Explorer FEAD, intake and GT-40P heads, wiring manuals, connectors, clutch kit, exhaust fabrication,etc. etc. Maybe you could do it for less if you had more skills.

Im on my second motor and 3rd transmission with my 5.0 swap. I lost oil pressure when the first oil filter relocation kit failed the M5OD-R2 trans wasn't cutting it for the high rpms I run at times. The first T5 was cobbled together from 3 or 4 other T5s then I bought a brand new T5Z. Now im thinking about pulling the engine again to do a top end kit. But im waiting till till I find a nice frame to get blasted and powder coated or build one. if you like v8's then that's what you do. You just deal with the nonsense.

It depends on which way you go..
If I would have left it "stock"..
Bought a 99 mercury mountaineer for $700 . The guy delivered it and I backed in off the trailer in front of my house.
I pulled the engine, harness and exhaust. Brand new battery and a $600 cd/dvd player.
Sold the rest of the truck for $450. Sold the cats for $550. Sold the battery for $50. Kept the Pioneer unit and engine and harness.
I made $350 and a free engine. Free Pioneer $600 unit.
Swap mounts were $50. Driveshaft was$40. Had I used the stock exhaust and kept it bone stock(which was the plan) I wouldn't have had nothing but time in the swap and a couple hundred in my pocket.

I can do some stuff .. but I try to keep it to the simple nuts and bolts.

Thinking after doing some other stuff of buying a remanufactured and throwing it on a rack in the shed and buy components little at a time. This way when it comes time, pull / drop basically. Lessens the cash blow that way.

It is leaking in the area of the front cover/s. I do have the occasional tap..I think this might be either the belt tensioner or front chain tensioner. Doesnt sound high on the engine.

I'll start on the engine when I get it back. Its in the shop getting the rear brakes done. I will do what I want to and buy the parts and pay for the labor for stuff I dont want to do. Rear brakes are a pita.

Turns out it wasnt the brake cylinder leaking. The seal was leaking. One side of the shaft is pitted. So ... "go ahead and replace both sideswhile your in there and do the service (ofcourse)..."

2019 Civic ... 2019 Harley Street Glide (124 ci rebuild with all the toys) .. house paid off .. kids living here but bascially "doing their own thing" ... six figure Sr Network Engine Salary ... RN wife near six figure salary.

I can afford it. It's a matter of how much I want to spend on my new toy !
