I have a 1988 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 2WD and I been experiencing some serious issues. I been trying to diagnose the Issue since i first got it. I bought it on Dec 28th, first thing I did was change,Spark Plugs,Cables,Oil, cleaned the injectors, oil filter, fuel filter and rebuild transmission since it was really bad. I would try driving it when it was cold it drove perfect after heating up and couple minutes of driving it, it starts getting sluggish it hesitates to go it chokes bad and it wants to shut off. It feels like a miss fire as well. I decided to get a new MAP sensor and TPS, Also changed the IAC valve. This weekend I took the Catilyc Converter out and installed a new O2 sensor. All of this helped tremendously but issue is still there. My next step is to replace injectors or my fuel pump. This truck has the the fuel pump housing in the tank and I feel like that's a big issue. Hopefully you guys can help and let me know if you guys have experienced any of this. Oh by the way in the process of getting me a ODB1 to check codes dont have one yet! Thank you guys

Get an ohm reading both when cold of ect and iat sensors.

Ect has two posts, temp gage has one. Ignore single post.

Also your code off your ecm if you would.

Thanks man I'll try that. I will be purchasing that ODB1 code module this weekend

Eh? City slicker? ;brownbag;

Jumper your obd1 harness with a paperclip, run back to the cab and don't do anything but write down single digit Morse code style cryptic messages from your truck's brain. Post what the wizard tells us. We shall decipher the runes...

Have pencil and paper ready. EEC-IV waits for no one.

Takes a good 10 minutes to activate deep memory and stored codes. It's a 32 year old computer.

It. It uh... It ain't exactly an IPhone... **** it's barely a calculator. You can replace it with an arduino (child's/development board for veeeeery basic c++ learnins and prototypins) with a little know how. So. 10 mins and do it twice. I use. Legal pad and a pencil. One number per line, run down the page like you're writing in mandarin (or traditional... Can't remember). Just... Up to down, not left to right.

Sounds good herd about this trick I will try as well!

Oh no trick. This is your Vulcan mind meld with your truck.

Soon the Canadians will swoop from the heavens and grant wisdom.

Oh, and Haynes manual if you don't have one already. Crazy useful stuff, if for nothing else wiring diagrams and torque specs.

Oh! And welcome to TRS and stuff.

Furthermore,

:worthless:

Hiiiiii! I'm their resident 2.9... Um. Enthusiast? I'm wrong half the time, so, here's to hoping!

Thanks PJ412 I will be posting pictures soon lol! And yes I have ordered a Haynes manual from Rock Auto since I shop there frequently.

Good on. The 2.9 is a misunderstood engine. Euro touring car engine that was shoehorned into a pickup platform.

If fed lots o air, block coolant passages and rad flushed once a year, and kept squeaky clean (invest in a catch can and a set of valve cover grometts if yours are leaky), they run their asses off forever.

Overheating is certain death for them. Like, no second chances for your heads if 86 tm casting.

Aftermarket heads make it damn near invincible.
