Looks like the 4WD Regular Cab is no longer an option, neither is the 3.0L.

Haven't been able to get a reg cab 4x4 here ( Canada ) for a long while. Or a 3.0l 4x4.

Been all 4.0L ext cab.

I still don't fully understand why torsion bar suspension is still used. Are they really that much better than coils? Another thing I don't get is why does anyone still use rear drums? They're needlessly complicated and less efficient and effective than discs.

Torsion bars are used on 4wd setups because of the axle shafts for the front wheels. If it had coils, the axle shafts would have to go straight through the coil to get to the wheel. That's why the 2wds have coils, but 4wds have torsion bars. And torsion bars are used on A LOT of vehicles. Pretty much all 4wd trucks and SUVs with IFS similar to Rangers, some older Hondas, etc.

As for rear drums, they're simply cheaper. And you get a better, stronger parking brake than with discs. I've never had trouble stopping my Ranger or Explorer, both equipped with drums. The front brakes do most of the work anyway.

Newer (04+) 4x4 F-150's are coil sprung, so are all four corners of the 02+ Explorer. The concept of coil sprung independant suspensions isn't a new one. While common for awhile, torsion bars seem to making a retreat lately.

Ford disc brakes usually have small drum brakes for the parking brake inside the rotor (neat idea really) Both the Explorer 8.8 I have to put in my Ranger and the 9.75 in my F-150 have this set up. Disc brakes are also cheaper to produce/maintain than drums, and perform better.

That sucks I really get sick of always seeing ext. cab rangers. I personally like regular cab trucks. Nowadays a regular cab 4X4 seems rare. I just wish I had a 4.0

At work security has a white 4x4 2005 std cab shortbox, with I assume a 3.no It would be a very fun truck to have, as you just don't see them in that configuration often anymore.

And I like my colone, it has proven itself very tough thru the years and is stupid easy to work on and modify. If I had a 5 speed or a C5 in the truck right now I would shop for another 2.8 in a heartbeat. But since the existing engine probably won't last forever*, and the A4LD is a time bomb, I am moving on to a V-8 / C5 combo.

*in theory, but it really hasn't shown much sign of giving up for good yet.

I will not get a new ranger with a Cologne engine. Period. The only reason I would get an older one is if it was cheap....really cheap. What can I say, I have worked on them and compared to the 3.0 and limas, I just don't like them.
