89 BII

I'll be sad if it comes out poorly. Being right at your expense is not something I would enjoy.

I forgot to mention the other day, I had to go on a little trip about 2 hours away for my sister's wedding. The Bronco drove great the entire way there and back, which I was really happy about.
Now onto some excuses and good/bad news. I couldn't get around to doing the fenders today after work. I also found out that my grandpa, who I work for, will probably have to get surgery on his back due to a herniated L4-L5 disc. This was very shocking news to me. With that being said, I will now have to pick up the slack from him not being able to work. Basically I will be working from the time I get out of school (11:00am) until 4:00 every evening for a while. The work I will be doing will be stuff that I've never had to do before because he's always done it, so he's gonna have to teach me. I have no clue how long it will take for me to finish the job, hopefully no more than 3 weeks. All that being said, I will make a ton of money during this period. Probably around the time I finish the job, my birthday will be here, exactly one month from today, so I will get even more money. After all this has blown over, I should have enough for the shocks and maybe even the coils/springs.

Welcome to TRS! If you have to replace the axle anyways, I would recommend upgrading to the D35, which is much beefier and can take much more abuse than the D28 that's in it right now. It is a direct bolt in, making it pretty easy. Do a lot of research and make sure you are very comfortable with performing the mod before you start on it. As for finding one, I would recommend checking your local junkyards, craigslist, and ebay. At the top of the page on this site, go to "Tech Articles". There is a lot of information on this swap and many other modifications.

If you read all that and still want to just replace the D28, then I would recommend going to junkyards, craigslist, and ebay. You can google, look at other forums, or use the tech articles to find information on how to do it.

Make sure whatever axle you get has the same gear ratio as the one you have now.

Haven't updated in a while, mostly because I haven't made any progress. I've been working a good bit, but I still have at least 2 more weeks left before I have a good break. I'm updating because I have a few questions. There are some sounds coming from the bronco that have been there since I got it (I think). One being a loud rattling/metal clanking/tin can crushing sound. I know it sounds bad the way I'm describing it and it might be a big issue. It isn't really a consistent "rattle" type sound. More like a tin can crushing really loudly if anything. I've read that it could be heat shields or exhaust rattle but I'm not sure. Second question, can I unplug my a/c compressor without issues? My a/c hasn't blown cold since I got the truck and I believe the compressor is shot, but it might just need a recharge or something. Instead of spinning freely like it should, it has intervals. Every 10 seconds or so it will come on and spin for around 2 seconds really loudly, then stop. It will do that over and over again. It does that without the a/c being on, not sure why.
I will try to get some sound clips of the noises, not sure when I will be able to do that, though.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the tin can sound only happens when in gear (drive/reverse). Any other gears and it doesn't make a peep.

AC sounds like a low charge. I don't know of a reason why you cant unplug the connector at the AC.
The tin can sound, odd that it doesn't make noise in first or second gear? If it does, then I would guess driveshaft or rear gears. When my original CV based driveshaft went bad it sounded a lot like a tin can full of rocks rolling down the road.

For your saggy rear:

For $100 I got them with my Explorer rear axle ($100 for everything) your results may vary but it is fairly easy to change out springs and used ones are fairly cheap.

Your BII looks sharp, kinda freaky it looks a lot like Will's old BII (search around, it was pretty cool)

As far as "a plan"... you are young. Don't do anything drastic (like rolling fenders), research the heck out of every hairbrained idea you come up with before you do it. You will learn more things about it and how to do stuff and your "plan" will change.

I got my truck 17 years ago as a sophomore in high school... it isn't much like I intended for it to be back then.

Yeah I figured that on the a/c, I'll unplug it until I can get it fixed. I'll try to get a sound clip of the tin can. I'll also check the dshaft. Thanks!

I've read about the expo leaf springs, do they give any lift at all? I mean besides the obvious 1" or so I will get because my current springs are sagging.
I might've seen Will's BII before, or at least I have seen one that is painted the same color as mine.
I have been researching A LOT. For now, I want to get new shocks because they are necessary in my opinion. My current shocks couldn't absorb a piece of paper laying on the road :icon_rofl:
Thanks for the insight!

I don't know much about how dshafts and axles work, does the dshaft spin while the vehicle is stationary? I mean like in gear (drive or reverse) but my foot on the brake. Also, do the axle gears spin while stationary? The noise starts immediately after I shift, while my foot is on the brake and I'm not moving.

If your vehicle is stationary and your foot on the brake, then neither the driveshaft nor the axles will turn. The engine can be running and then the torque convertor or clutch plate will turn, but basically nothing else. The convertor and.or the clutch seperate the engine from the rest of the drive train.

Ok, thanks. I'm not sure how the tin can sound could be coming from the dshaft or the axle if neither of them are doing anything while stationary. I don't have work tomorrow, or any other plans that I know of so I will try to get out there and get an idea of some of these sounds. Thanks, again. Did you happen to look at the post with the sound clip? Still don't know if people can view it.

I did hear the clip. It sounds like it's coming from torque convertor bolts hitting the engine plate. There is an inspection plate held on by 2 bolts. Remove it. Block the wheels so you don't get run over.
Edit; maybe look at the bolts without the engine running. It seems like you a fairly inexperienced around engines and I don't want you hurt. You could disconnect the ignition system and then have a friend turn it over to see if you can see or hear where the sound is coming from.

That'd be a hell of a way to go :icon_rofl:

Seriously though, could that cause damage? I'm not too familiar with where the inspection plate would be if you could point me in the right direction.
