My tailgate handle has been broke since i bought the truck and today I finally decided to take it apart. The right side latch has never latched, only the left latch keeps the tailgate up. I looked at it and I can't figure out why the right side won't make it all the way into the hole. It's never been wrecked but the right side is off just enough so it won't latch. Maybe when the handle broke, the previous owner did something to make it not latch because the handle will only un-latch the left side. I'd like to fix the handle but itd be pointless if I can't figure out why the right won't latch.

Anywho, when I took it apart, I noticed that the right thingy (idk what it's called)was completely rusted in two and the left was getting to that point. Is there a replacement for this and if so, what is it called? Link for part would be appreciated! I have pics, if they don't show up, let me know and I will do it on my computer because I'm doing it on crapatalk. The pics will explain what I'm talking about.

Can't get pictures to upload on photobucket. It keeps saying upload failed. What do I do?

Ok I think I finally got it to work.

This is the rusted out part I am talking about.

Here is what I'm talking about the tailgate being off and wont latch.
Right side

Left side

The right latch, which looks ok but won't latch.

As you can tell, it used to latch by the wear marks. It wont latch no matter how hard I push on the tailgate. Hopefully the pics show this time, ugh.

It is the Handle itself that has rotted out- parts 5 or 6 in the LMC diagram. Looking at your pics again it could be part 8, I'd have to look at my truck.

I wonder if the previous owner tried to adjust the latches to get them to close.

I think I found why it won't latch. The thingy (circled red) is hitting the other thingy (circled blue) too early.

Your pictures aren's showing up but it sounds like you need the pieces that connect the handle assembly to the latches? Rock auto calls them "tailgate release cables."

Part 10 for a styleside bed, $10
No, it's a hinge thing that holds the handle in place. From the looks of it, I think I'd have to replace that whole mechanism. And I don't think I seen the part on that page. Although it had everything else lol.

I found this and I'm pretty sure this is the part. What is it called?

Just get a black steel one from LMC and call it a day.

and if you really need it color matched- can of duplicolor from your local parts store.

That would look soo bad.

Plenty of Rangers have black handles. If you really care, Just mask off the mechanism and Duplicolor it.

All my handles are green, it'd be wierd with just one black handle. I looked on fordparts.com and they have the color, mine is what they call pacific green lol, and it's like $56. A bit pricy but at least it's the right color.
