Keep-it-Kool A/C System Sealer

My 92 Ranger 3.0 5sp air conditioner only worked about 6 years. A mechanic friend told me it was the hose seals that leaked - a typical Ford Ranger problem said he. So now I see Keep-it-Kool A/C System Sealer on the web and was wondering if anyone used it and with what if any success. I purchased R12 at WalMart before it went illegal to do so and have 3 12oz cans left so I can do the repair. Before I do I want to make sure it will work and I don't waste precious R12. Thanks.

You'll waste the "precious R-12."

Stop-leak wrecks A/C systems. And your problem might have started with a leaky O-ring (which are very easily replaced -- the correct repair), but it's a lot worse than that now. Ten years of water vapor exposure is DEATH to an air conditioner.

makg is dead on. at this point, it would be worth it for you to replace any needed components, retrofit to r134a, and sell those cans of r12. youre drier is full of water by now (15 mins of exposure to the atmosphere will ruin it) and needs replaced, along with the offending o-rings or seals you are having problems with. your 'stop leak' could plug your orifice tube just as easy as it can plug a leak.

Yup. Convert it over. I say this, and I still have three cases of precious R-12 on hand.

Thanks guys. Time for some ripping, pulling and replacing. I guess in the back of my mind I knew I'd have to go to 134a at some point. Won't be able to hang meat in the cab anymore but at least I can cruise on these lovely 100 degree Carolina days.

MAKG - I see central coast of Cal as your location. I went to HS and JC in Lompoc and Santa Maria.

Exactly, you could probably pay for a entire retrofit kit, for what those R12 cans would sell for!

It's pre-ban! Also you never know how long your compressor will last, on my '84 I retrofitted after consulting TRS about five years ago,

I replaced the o-rings with the green ones
I pulled a vacuum using a cheap vacuum pump from Harbor freight.
I even replaced the orfice and accumulator.
(MAKG helped me thru the entire process)

It works still, but my clutch is showing "clutch dust" all over the front, and the pulley is wobbling a little, so once the compressor goes then it's over.

At Walmart, sure.

At a halfway decent auto parts store, you may need to ask for it.

I don't have any trouble finding small cans of just R-134a. Just distributed directly from DuPont instead of through Interdynamics or whatever.

DON'T DO IT! I am a residential/light commercial HVAC tech. There is a similar product on the market for convential HVAC equipment. Last summer an apartment complex I maintain asked me to use it in 3 systems which had a leak.......by the end of the summer all 3 compressors had seized up. Instead of just replacing a leaking evaporator coil they also had to change the compressors as well. NOT worth it. Fix it right and be done with it.
