Starter motor "may" work, but I would guess no, since there would only be 1 right one and several wrong ones, lol.

ok thats helps thanks. the 302 i have is a 74...my np435 im using came off a 351m. so from what im gathering from the tigerdan post i need the correct flywheel for my motor and then the correct starter and flexplate for the motor (not the other way around as far as the tranny is concerned because the bellhousings are the same)?

A 351M(Modified) & 302W(Windsor) do not have the same bellhousing pattern!!

A 351W & 302W do.

Yes what he said. The 351M, M for Modified, does NOT share a bellhousing with the 302, or 351W, W for windsor.

The 351C [cleveland] and 351W [windsor] share bellhousing bolt pattern with the 302. The 351M [michigan?] shares bellhousing pattern with the 429/460. To confuse things, IIRC the 351C shares the distributor with the 429/460.

351M, the M means modified.
that engine started out as a 400 CID, the factory put 351 cranks in them to make a 351M. rods and pistons differ between them too.
bellhousing is also the same as FE sries, 352/390/428

^^^Well, now I'm confused. The 429/460 doesn't share a bell pattern with the FE blocks. Either I'm mis-informed or you are. I have never actually measured the 351m bolt pattern, did you?

351m shares a bellhousing with the 429/460, not the FEs. I know this because my buddy had a 79 f150 that had a 351m, a 400m, and finally a 460, but one transmission, lol.

351M, 400, 429 and 460 mostly have the same bolt pattern

There are a few early 400's that snuck out in cars with a small block bolt pattern but they are very rare.

So is the 3.8 and 4.2 for that matter, later on they went to 12mm bolts so you have to bore out the tranny bellhousing holes to get SBF 1/2" bolts in but the pattern is the same.
