there are certain things in the RR that are good, steady employment for the first oh IDK 5 years isnt one of them in most departments. I have been furloughed twice so far, once for 6 months and once for 3 months. the winter is the slow season here in basically every department. I had to move to the bay to keep working. I have a guy from my hiring session that has been furloughed for a few months because he didnt want to move down here. I have a buddy who does track maintenance who has to move up to quincy from colfax for the winter cause things are slowing down. It is a high stress job sometimes, and the management sucks, but if you can make it through the first 5-10 years its a solid gig. Train crew is what they hire for when they put out for train conductor positions. its gonna be a long bumpy road just like mine if you go down it but when the work is booming it can be good, when I am working steady I make 4500-5k a month, and once my seniority goes up I can make 8k. we get raped on taxes, my last check for 2 weeks was 2300 before taxes. I took home 1200. you have lots of money taken out for retirement and union dues and such.
on a side note you can weld. in rocklin I might be able to put you in contact with some guys doing structural steel welding for LB construction.
