ranger refit/build thread

For cars, yes. Mercury marine is a different company.

Most of the mercury marine stuff is Chevy based. If you go buy a mercruiser 6 cylinder inboard, it's a 4.3. If you get a mercruiser small block, its a Chevy 350.

mercruiser uses both ford and chev engines for inboard applications,302s are as common as 350s.
in this case the efi 90 is actually a yamaha engine dressed in mercury clothing...and yamaha has been majority owned by ford for decades.

Well damn, guess I learned something new today.

Oh i didn't mean to turn it into a diesel, thats just the only modern example of an automotive two stroke i had. And it can be done without porting, both detroit and mercedes make make valve operated two strokes for industrial applications like generators. The biggest reason for porting is to keep production and maintenance costs down. Its cheaper to cast a block with intake ports and only run half a valve train than it is to do it right. Maintenance is minimized because there are fewer moving parts. Even a ported two stroke relies on the intake charge to aid in exhausting the cylinder. Thats why all real two strokes (not lawn mowers and chainsaws and the like) require a supercharger, and some, like the detroit, make sure it's fed by puting a turbo behind it.

i could be wrong here, but the way i understand it the jimmys need the supercharger more as a scavenger effect then as a boost capacity. and they certainly will run backwards and smoke like hell till the stop.... units like the 16 cyl super turbos have the back to back supers to scavenge and the turbos for boost iirc. maybe i am wrong, i dont have any on any of the drilling rigs i have been working on these last few years.

Batter than the gears and power plant you've got in there?

Here's a logic question for ya, maybe not logic... But w/e, If you have enough gearing, could you propel a ranger to virtually any speed, with virtually any size motor?

Let me rephrase that, take a moderate motor, 3.0 or something, and a speed of say 250km/h could you gear it to do that speed, or is there a point where it just won't go any more? This being a theoretical situation, with no additional drivetrain loss than stock...

Lastly, hope everything works out with the home and family for you!

that is a shocking question to me. but i just reread this entire thing as its raining out and you have some crazy shit going on in there based on some past questions/assumptions.

canadians.....are more then one kind of crazy.

and i am ok with that.:thefinger:

gwaii.....am i understanding correctly you moved to where your at under the estate situation you mentioned or are you wanting to upgrade to the estate situation? (i am sure theres more to it then that) the way it seems to me if its the former you have some huge balls that would explain allot. i would need a wheel barrow for those bad berries and not be able to do much at all:shok:.

regardless i hope it works out for you and yours. i know i stand jealous of the fishing.

i am still not allowed in canada but i am working on it.

when i can, i will.

i moved here 7 years ago and have been renting the place...last december the landlady died,so now the property has gone to estate.

the lawyers are sorting things out right now,and when that's done i'll probably have an opportunity to buy the property.but,if i don't have a pile of cash on hand for the down payment and legal fees at that time...i won't be buying anything.

and i hate moving.

that makes sense... i remember doing those numbers actually, now that i think about it, when i was helping build this car...

i'm actually one of the people in the pic, but i won't say which one...

That is interesting... I thought Mercs were Chevy based

from what i remember, mercury marine used to be a division of ford way back, and they separated early in the company's life, which is why they can both bear the name mercury... but i could be wrong on that

well,i tossed one of the 200s on the old grady and tested it out on the weekend...what a rush:headbang:

now i'm going to try to get two of them on there for next weekend....that might just kill someone(like me:D)

No pics? And what size Grady?

Also Gwaii a boat just got built that may spark your interest... Let me find some pictures for you.

EDIT: here we go. The kiwis built it as a tender for their new 72' America's cup boat. She'll do 50 and will tow the sailboat at 25 minimum.

You still planning on hitting the main land Tom? The banner is here and not sure when or where it is heading out yet!

and pull a chuck norris, drive that boat through land to get the banner

it's in here...

http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128269

just a 1974 18 1/2' grady white bowrider.right now it tops out at 46mph with a 19p prop, but i've got a 22p that i think will give me another 7-10mph.i was running out of revs way before i was out of power.

i may try it out on wednesday evening,i'm hoping to have the twin 200s on it for sunday.we'll see how it goes.

Pretty sweet little rig.

We've had trouble finding the right prop for our '72 24' aquasport. The deutz just wants more and more prop, I think we're at 24"x24p 5 cup right now. Still run out of revs on the top end, but it idles at 8 knots almost.

yah, with an aluminum jet boat maybe...that would mess up the 'glass hull and engine legs pretty bad.at least tear up the props.

that's a lot of prop:shok:

Like I said - it's got a deutz. 6 cylinders of turbo diesel awesomeness. Not a lot of revs, but torque for days. So you have to get a prop to make that work.

Kinda fun that the tranny has the same ratio in forward as reverse :D
