Does anyone know how long the m5od-r2 4X4 tranny is compared to the m50d-r1? And how much farther back in the engine bay the 5.0L sits in a 1998-2000 ranger? Also, how much longer/wider is the BW4406 transfer case than the BW1354?

I'm trying to see if I can stuff a BW4406 under my regular cab ranger and I don't know if it or any other transfer case will clear the gas tank. I just measured, and my current setup (3.0L, m50d-r1, bw1354) puts my transfer case right at 5" from my gas tank. I really don't want to lose 4X4....

Can it be done?

Been done many of times, wrenzing has a 05(?) Ranger using the 5.0 and 4406. I have an 02 sport Trac (basically same frame short of some minor differences out back) with a 5.0. I'm using the 4404 until I can locate a 4406 to swap in...

Yea but most people go with the AOD from the explorer, and I'm using an m5od-r2. Is there much size difference between the two? I'd like to go this route instead of buying a $450 adapter for my bw1354 to fit the F-150 transmission.

I don't know how interested you are in this, but a guy is selling a brand new (never installed) manual 4406 for $500. At least I'm 99.9% sure it a 4406.

Yeah, that's been done many of times too. I don't have the measurements on hand, but it will fit with any Tcase you choose without getting near your fuel tank...

Thanks Shane, but I'm hunting for an electric version so i can use my factory 4x4 switch. I don't have room for a manual shifter, I have my whelen control box there...

Oh, sweet. I wouldn't mind buying it as a spare for my F150, but other things need my 500 dollars before that, LOL.

Much appreciated. Any idea if an electric shift 4406 is compatible with the ranger electric shift wiring (I have the annoying vacuum hubs)? I could make it work with some rewiring if need be, but it would be nice if few changes would need to be made.

The 44-06 came in 3 different varieties:

Manual shift
Elec shift
Torque On Demand

The Ranger 4x4 controls should work the Elec shift 44-06. They use the same shift motor and the shifter positions are the same between cases. Find a '99 or later one, it wont have the speedo hole.

The vacuum hubs wont make a difference, the T-case wont effect them, they are controlled by the GEM.

That's what I was hoping to hear. Thank you.
