Planning to drag race the ranger

Stuff a 5.0 into it and never look back. I can't stress enough how reasonable it was to do this swap, and how much it changes the nature of these trucks in only positive ways.

I dont really care to much about fuel economy, but for kicks, what kinda fuel usage do you get with the 5.0?

Depends on how heavy the shoe I am wearing that particular day. Driving briskly This is what I've averaged:

with 4.10's on a 26 inch tire naturally aspirated I was lucky to get 15 on the highway, got like 12-13 in town.

Still on the 4.10's, but now on a 28 inch tire with a blower, I'm getting 14 in town, 19 on the highway.

Switching to 3.55's, and back to 26 inch tires (Less rotating mass/lighter), Expecting 15-16 in town, 21-23 highway.

If I'm wailing on it, I don't even TRY to keep track of it... I burned a quarter of a tank at the drag strip last time out (10-12 passes)

Thats not bad at all with the 3.55's! And since your switching to 3.55's.... sell me your 4.10's? :D

I'll toss them up in the classifieds as soon as they are out of the truck :D

Like I said, Those 3.55's are just target MPG, haven't installed them yet :icon_twisted:

I am temporarily jacking this thread. Sorry OP!

But.. please explain to me what the difference is going from 3.73 (whats I have) to 4.10's. I know the 4.10's will be better for my larger tires, but will also give me less MPG...

so basically im asking... what the hell am I doing?

i want to 302 swap so bad but i just havent found a reason

Is your desire to go fast < or = to your will?

If Will < Desire to go fast than you need to establish Project Budget / Income

Project budget = Initial Budget X2

If Project Budget / Income is less than 1/8, then DO IT!!! :icon_rofl::icon_thumby:

For every 3.73 revolutions of the drive shaft, it will rotate the tire once with 3.73 gears. and obviously 4.10 gears means 4.10 revolutions.

Rangers typically make more power a bit higher in the rev range (More rpm's/revolutions) More power does not always mean worse MPG.

You are looking for efficiency, if you have larger tires than your truck had originally it looses efficiency as the 3.73 rear was optimal for the 28 inch tire your truck from the factory. This means that your truck is now needing more fuel to spin the larger tires because your truck is lower in the rev range.

by changing to 4.10's, you have essentially made it 'easier' for your truck to spin the larger tires. Less strain = More power, hence why you see people changing gears for performance, and not just for big tires.

well. i told my parents if either my motor goes or the trans, im putting a 302 in it because it would be about the same cost. my truck runs perfect and shifts fine. so yeah. i just couldnt justify tearing apart a perfectly good drivetrain just for a extra litre lol

I agree with this...When bulidin my 97, I was goin to do a 5.0 swap but just stuffed a 3.0 down in it thinkin it should be enough power for what i do..Well let's just say I should have went 5.0.
