ranger refit/build thread

three transmissions.

ok, so after reading through this beast of a thread two time :headbang: I wanted to ask to be sure, is the first t-case is flipped with no shaft coming out for 4wd? (did you leave a stub in there or did u make a block off plate for the old axle seal?

Also, could you go into more detail with the machine press and weld of the driveshaft to input for the transmissions? I am working on a similar project (though not a doubler underneath just a single in the bed to a single underneath with 2 transfer cases) and wanted to see what additional light you could shed on that topic for me (I was gunna do the short way of taking the clutch input and welding that )

One last thing.. lol. I read earlier that you said that the truck is RWD until you go into 4x4, but since the FRONT shaft drives the double tranny, and the front most 205 is flipped, wouldn't it be a FWD truck until you put the second 205 into 4x4?

Gwaii I spent the day wheeling in this truck's ultimate playground. We started of the day in snow, hit some hard pack dirt, some forest, some deep bog mud/muck, all in the shadow of a huge rock crawl area. I wish I had you truck and not mine, however the old 2WD did alright for itself.

i love places like that.it's a good variety, plus it's entertaining watching others try to follow you.

on the first t-case,the rear output was left on.both cases are twin-sticked,so the front and rear outputs can be controlled independently.when in 2wd,the second case has what used to be the front output-now the rear, engaged and the other in neutral.the first case the rear output just stays in neutral all the time.

I'm sure you could find a way to make the Warthog from HALO work in real life given enough time Tom:D

makes sense to me now.......local kid(well early 20's) calls my truck the warthog...has me calling it that...originally i thought it was simply because its so fawkin ugly.

i dont play videogames very often but i did see the halo before and played it a few minutes, i remember warthog now again but didnt place it from that..

vipers dont have fluid drive anything in the engine to wheels department...maybe the cooling fan:dunno:

they are simply brutally effective powertrains...and have to be to accelerate as violently as they do..

We looked like the most ragtag group when we finally made it through. Had an XJ with a busted door, a TTB V8 bronco towing a stockish BII(he broke down about halfway around the trail - the bronco was towing him for 3 hours:icon_surprised:), and my little 2wd open diff desert ranger trying to keep up...

I think the craziest part of the whole thing was just giving the broken BII a push down the hill back to the highway - his motor ran so he had full brakes and steering, but with no clutch he was trying to keep as much speed as possible - had to be pretty nuts

hey,that's what keeps it interesting:icon_thumby:

the tow job reminds me of an outing a few years back where there were about 20 trucks going to the top of a local mountain to camp over night.when one of the rigs didn't show up at the top,i went down looking for it with my little chop-top b2.i fouind it about 3/4 the way down....it had got off line going over some logs and knocked out it's rear driveshaft.i managed to pull it out of it's predicament and drag it's sorry ass all the way up to the top of the mountain.took babout two hours.

oh ya....the truck was a 3/4 ton chevy on 44'' boggers.it looked pretty funny being dragged up the mountain by my little b2.

i used to do this lots.my first ranger, with the 2.3td had a habit of exploding clutches.the area i usually wheeled at was close enough to home that if i kept enough momentum i could roll right home without power.if i had to slow down for anything(like traffic)i was screwed.

Yeah its always funny seeing stuff like that.

I think what happened to the BII to make it stop working was the mud in the clutch plates that I think was discussed in this thread. He could get the truck to move in all the gears, but it had to be at like 3000 rpm and it wouldn't do over 10 mph. What do you think?

also he broke the shifter off but a vice grip in its place made it work perfectly :icon_thumby:

that's a house dude...

I'm guessing a lifted amc eagle?

i used to have one of those critters

it was ugly fun:icon_hornsup:
