How do I know if this ZF 6hp is for a Ford or BMW?
69839

Did Ford ever use the 6hp? I only know of them using the manual ZF.

The info I got from google just told me that the BMW 6hp was the same gear ratio as a Ford 6R. but I cant find what they go in or came from

check the bell housing pattern?
that won't say for certain it can be used, certainly will say it can't be used.

Besides looking at the bell housing, I have no idea to tell, but after more research, I found out it's a BMW. I just called the guy I got them from and asked if he knew what they were for. He said one was from the JY and the other came out of his BIL's BMW car. Didn't know the model, all he knew, it was a car, not an SUV.

Bell housing is how I know

@bobbywalter, @pjtoledo, You can just look at a bell housing and tell it's for a Ford? I get that the bell housings would/should be different, but I don't have a pattern to hold up to it to compare. So when you say "look at the bell housing", what, exactly am I looking at/for? Just out of curiosity?

Bolt hole spacing and general shape. What side the starter is on. Comes with experience mainly. Im usually looking at the spacing between the top two bolt holes.

I made a template from the engine.
rear engine plates work too, but they don't locate the crankshaft.

I can usually tell. And I have engine spacer gaskets for many applications.
