so ive been down this road before.. you figure i would of learned.. well i had to do a head job on my 99 ranger. so i thought i was going to be smart and do it right heads were cracked.... so i ordered new heads from alabama cylinder head. truck ran good before and had NO noise.... tear down day.. everything looks good.. got the heads on . pushrods and rocker arms were galled a bit but i didnt have a noise before so i said ahh i should be alright. get it all together and low and behold i have valve train noise.. alright.. i order up new push rods and rocker arms from advance and i must say they are nice quality, bigger and pushrods are thicker.. i also got some alum spacers machined for the rocker arms.. get it all together and i STILL have a damn noise.. almost 100% its the damn lifters.. truck has 110k on it.. why would it have a lifter noise now and not before the heads? i didn't bother to clean them due to the mileage and how the truck sounded before..

If there are new valve springs on the new heads...that would cause the lifters to complain....

I would almost wonder if the new heads are restricting oil flow to the valve train. seems to be the only common item to the two sets of pushrods/ rockers...

doorgunner.. you do have a point.. my 95 i rebuilt.... ran into same damn problem.. new heads new valve train and i had a wicked lifter noise.. took it apart and i did noticed all the lifters were crudded up took me about 2 hrs to clean them all then it was smooth sailing.. and i didnt have a clatter when i ran the motor before the rebuild.. humm.... now why would the valve spring have anything to do? just gets weak?

All the heads really do is drain the oil back into the crankcase. I don't know how a 4.0 is set up but my 2.8 had a rocker arm shaft which might restrict oil but probably wouldn't come with a remain head anyway. Usually a remain head (and not a bare head) just comes with valves, springs and all the little parts that hold it all together.

The springs and lifters wear together so you have two worn parts working together. Replace one (the springs) and then the lifters can't hold enough pressure to compress the new fresh springs... I think that is doorgunners logic anyway.
