We used to laugh at the souvenir shops where we'd stop. My father took us on many adventures, I only realized now that is what they were. He was a true character.
The little souvenirs were spoons, bells, whatever, and each spoke of the places they were there to represent, yet, each one had a label underneath that said "Made In Japan", and later Taiwan, etc etc.
After the two world wars, which USA mostly won, the country got inundated with incoming hordes, much like happened to Rome. Our government paid their passage, gave them money, an apartment or maybe a house and a car. There were people riding around in cadilacs talking on their free phones living in their free houses, eating their free groceries, and laughing all the way to the bank
I'm fairly certain the last laugh is going to be on us :/
While I somewhat the same, I don't see how you feasibly unwind it? The person who tries will wind up 'cancelled' in the fastest possible way. They tried welfare-to-work already. We saw what happened there. To your point, free phones, free food, free rent, etc.
I remember being at the grocery store with my Mother. It was summer break and Dad was at work. Young and naïve, I saw a woman with a fur coat and jewelry galore paying for her groceries. I turned to my Mom and asked, 'what kind of money is that'? She leaned over and quietly whispered 'food stamps'. As we returned to our car, I saw here drive away in her Cadillac. I pointed to the car. Mom slapped my hand and said 'don't point'! On the way home, I got a stiff education in some of the ways of the world. I've been observing the same behavior for years. I was nine then. I'm in my 60's now and it's only gotten worse.
People get free stuff, they throw their votes in that direction. All to say on that one. Additionally, the person who tries to take it away will be accused of creating the 'most horrible humanitarian disaster in this country's history', even if the depression was #1, the dust bowl number#2 (Grapes of Wrath).
No, I don't think anyone has the stones to unwind this one. And I mean no one.
