Y-pipe for 4.0L V6

My son has a 1998 2WD 4.0L V6 Ranger. The exhaust has got a bit loud and he has an O2 sensor code. He took it to an exhaust shop and they found he needed a Y-pipe and cat, but they could not locate a y-pipe. Best they could do was fabricate one for about $800, which is a bit ridiculous. He won't need an e-test for another year and can put up with the noise. Can it really be true that an aftermarket y-pipe is not available anywhere?

They are out there, probably the shop will make more by making one for you.

Thanks for the link. Are there actually 3 cats, one in each branch of the Y-pipe and another one bolted on behind? If so, that adds up to $725.37 including shipping, not much less than what the shop quoted him to fabricate.

After talking to the exhaust shop, this is what it is. The y-pipe is rotted out and the replacement only comes with converters (the original didn't) so that's what he'd have to fabricate.The converter behind the y-pipe is also rotten, but that can be replaced.

Cost of non do it yourself! Shop has to turn a buck. Just way it is.

Yes, but on the other hand $800 for a non-cat y-pipe to be made when I can buy the catted one for $250? And cats ain't cheap.

I believe the quote was for the whole job, make a plain y-pipe and replace the cat and pipe after it.

Nope. Lots of people pay close to $1000 for a new exhaust. He's only hesitating because it's a 1998. Still cheaper than a new truck.

Guess I'll jump in here. I got a first-hand look at the cross over/ y-pipe on my truck, 2 o2 sensors, 1 cat where there should be 2, and a cherry Bomb muffler. Sounds pretty good but it's not going to last, it's a hack job.

We took one look at the connections of the y-pipe to the manifolds, looked at each other and I said "no way, NO WAY!". I can wait until if, or if ever, we replace the engine!
