are the ball joints limited to a certain amount of movement? say in inches of wheel travel, if all limiting factors were removed like shocks and what not how far down would the spindle drop?
Not very far. The spindle is attached at the top and the bottom and sandwich a spring between them. If all the components are intact they will pivot up and down in a normal range of motion. Usually about 6-8 inches. If something breaks then all bets are off. Example...if a lower ball joint lets go the spring will drop the lower control arm about 8 inches and the bottom part of your wheel will splay out. Very expensive to fix. Even in just parts. Just a note to the wise: make sure you use new cotter pins on your castle nuts on your suspension repairs.
