Well changed out the discap, and plugs and wires as far as I can tell, I have all the wires hooked up. Starter is turning, engine still doesn't want to start. Give it a little gas runs for a second then dies. when let of the gas, it sounds like popcorn is meing made in the muffler and shooting out the tail pipe.

I need lots of :beer::beer:-really need whiskey, but no pic for that!

Maybe check your spark plug gaps, I think they have to be set about .43

spark plugs

What I am using

I bought the bosch 8mm wires a duralast high performance cap, and the motorcraft wopper tip plugs. plugs were supposed to be pregapped, so I did not even mess with them. Guess I should have checked just to be safe. I will pull them when I can, and check them/

was it running properly before you changed the wires etc.?

try this...if you get the codes , that will help point you in the right direction as to what to repair.

have you replaced the fuel filter?? the popping hints of a lean fuel condition

Also couldn't hurt to get the TFI, (aka ignition module) module checked. most mainstream parts stores will check them for free. not sure if it has been replaced or not?

Truck

Truck was running ok. Seemed to bog down maybe miss a little in low gear, and would die in idle. last night it did die on me, lukcily I was feet from my driveway and could push it in. Fuel filter was replaced about three weeks ago. Also replaced the breather filter when I replaced the plugs, new pcv valve as well. Motor is an 89 in an 86.

when this dies does it restart right away? or...do you have to wait a few hours then it restarts and runs fine until it gets warm/up to temp?

how long ago was the engine swap done?

Engine swap 6 months aprox. Well I don't know if I understand question. I turn the key, starter engages it kind of stalls. Give it some gas, and then it will try to start. Engine runs for about a second, then the popcorn in a tin can sound. try to turn the key over again and the popping no engine start. Then wont restart at all, just accessory lights and buzzing sound.

is the timing set correctly. (10deg btdc, with spout plug removed) sometimes the clamp to hold the distributor will slip.

Has this run good other wise until now?

Havent checked the timing yet. Don't have a tool. maybe borrow one from the rental store? Not sure how to use it though. spout plug? Also will check cap to see if it is on properly. This is the two screw type.

PS ran decent before. Seem to have a loss in power everyonce and a while in low gear. Possible trans slip? Or timing problem, died in idle occasionaly.

PSS Kunz recomends 12deg for the timing-with the high performance stuff, would 10 be better with my setup?

PSSS Din't notice in earlier post TFI was not replaced. Probably the original the way it looks.

go back and re check ur wire order if it ran good till you changed them that should be the problem and doublecheck the plug gap.sometimes pregapped plugs are gapped for different applications most of the time its not an issue but i always double check em so this way io know for sure and dont have to pull em back out goodluck

id definately recheck the plug wire order and make sure each wire is fitting tight on the cap and make sure it pushed all the way down on the plug, sounds to me like you got a couple plug wires mix matched.

Problems

Ok, still working at it. Though I am ready to push it off the cliff! I put the old rotor cap back on. Noticed there was a crack on the shaft of the rotor itself. No real popping sound, but now motor wont engage. Hear the starter and the moor tries to turn but no fire. like it isnt getting fuel-fuel pump?

Jeremy

chances are your firing order is off and swapping back to the original cap and rotor isn't going to make a bit of difference if it is If it ran OK before you swapped them chances are that is what the issue is. The plug gap isn't going to make a whole hell of a difference in getting it to run as long as none of the plugs are so far out of adjustment that the electrodes are touching.
