The Federal emissions uses batch fire fuel injection while the California Emissions uses sequential fuel injection and has the EGR system.
There are several ways to spot the difference:
• the big give away is the EGR components on the driver's side of the exhaust/engine/upper intake
• less evident are the wires to the individual injectors, each will have a red ground wire while all 6 power will have a different colored power wire. The Federal fuel injection negative wires are all the same color while the left and right banks are different colors.
There is also mention of it on the emissions sticker under the hood by the hood latch, as it shows the approximate location of the EGR valve.
