I have a 2002 2.3 automatic 2wd. just bought the truck about 4 months ago and i'm like 99% sure previous owner put the wrong transmission dipstick in it. when you stick it in, you can feel it bottoming out on the pan and it wants to come back out the tube like its too long. and whenever I check the fluid it says it is absurdly overfull. my mechanic serviced it and knows for a fact he put the correct amount of fluid in it and its still reading way overfull. bugging me because I had a leak and now I dont know how much fluid to add because my dipstick is reading wrong.

I've looked all over online for a dipstick I can just buy and apparently nobody has one. I'm going to go to a junkyard and see if I can find one my question is what year range and engines would have the same dipstick? i haven't found many 2.3's in junkyards near me (hopefully a good thing) mostly 3.0's.

making a broad assumption since I am too lazy too look it up, but most likely you have the 4r44e trans (since your profile says auto) and that uses
1L5Z-6750-AA
$11 at Ford

looks like the exact perfect fitment is only '01-11 Rangers with 4 banger (which makes sense, the V6 got the stronger 4r55e trans typically) could be anything else that uses the 4r44e for "it works and fits perfectly but is a different part number" but what else uses the 4r44e I don't know.

Yes this is why I wanted to ask, i tried to google myself and couldn't find any answers. I thought my truck has the 5r44e in it. Which I guess doesn't really matter if the dipstick is the same cause thats all I'm looking for.
But correct me if I'm wrong the link you sent is for the oil not transmission fluid?

gack... my bad.. I searched for trans dipstick for your year and engine and that is what narrowed it to 4r44e (without looking up your door tag or possibilities)... and then drilled down - I swore I was looking at trans dipstick but that is an oil I linked, my error. Lets start over - what is your door tag sticker Trans code?

If we are talking about that trans, I found a list

FordAEROSTAR954 SP R/4WDV6 3.0L 4.0L
FordAEROSTAR96-974 SP RWDV6 3.0L
FordRANGER95-014 SP R/4WDL4 2.3L 2.5L V6 3.0L
FordTRANSIT04 SP RWDL4 2.5L
MazdaNAVAJO91-944 SP RWDV6 4.0L
MazdaPICKUP944 SP RWDL4 2.3L V6 3.0L 4.0L
MazdaPICKUP B SERIES95-024 SP R/4WDL4 2.3L 2.5L V6 3.0L
MCWMETROCAB00-014 SP RWDL4 2.5L

but again not worth chasing that list if we aren't talking about the right trans.. so lets figure that out first.

I will look at my door sticker when I get off work and let you know. Thanks

my door sticker is scratched off cant really read it... but i pulled the transmission dipstick and it has a part number on it. i googled the part number and it does come up with a 2002 ford ranger dipstick but it doesnt say what engine its for. now im confused.

Trans code looks pretty solidly like a "D" to me. which would be a 5R44E (the weaker 440 rated version of the 5R55E) so a does a "5 speed" jive with what you feel and are told?
lookup is here:

almost the same interchange - few things are different

FordAEROSTAR975 SP R/4WDV6 4.0L
FordEXPLORER/SPORT TRAC97-085 SP R/4WDV6 4.0L
FordRANGER97-115 SP R/4WDL4 2.3L V6 3.0L 4.0L
FordRANGER01-115 SP R/4WDL4 2.3L V6 3.0L
MazdaPICKUP B SERIES97-105 SP R/4WDV6 4.0L
MazdaPICKUP B SERIES00-085 SP R/4WDL4 2.3L 2.5L V6 3.0L
MercuryMOUNTAINEER98-004 SP R/4WDV6 4.0L

Still no luck with a part number - will do some more searching when I am done wiring for the night.

well... 2 numbers different part number ("Z" not "P" and "FB" not "FC") is for a 2.3L with 5R44E mfg before 2/20/03 - dunno what they changed on that day...

looks like it was replaced by 3L5Z-7A020-BA

both of em say "oil" not engine oil or trans oil... but they are on the "internal parts - transmission external" diagram so they are tranny parts.

all 117 auto tranny dipsticks:

well now im extremely confused because from what im understanding i have the correct dipstick.... why the hell does it show overfull everytime i check it no matter how much fluid is in it. im checking it warm with the truck idling in park...

did you find the 5P....-FC somwwhere? cause I couldn't find it anywhere short of asking a buddy to dig out the microfish reader (parts counter guy)

Did you try going to fordpartscatalog.com and searching by starting with your VIN and drilling down?
