wrong gearing from factory?

It's new, I have had the truck for three months. The axle code on the door is a "96" which is 3.73 gear ratio, and the truck is marked in Canada with 4.10 gearing. Axle should have been a "97" I guess.

So a little update...

Talked to the service manager, and he seemed pretty annoyed that I didn't drop the issue. I explained that I had emailed and he replied with "I didn't get a email" I explained to him what I did and that I was going to push the issue still. He said that he would have to remove the axle cover and count the teeth to confirm the gearing. He also said that he never heard of rotating the wheel twice and counting the rotations of the drive shaft, and that the only way to confirm is by counting the teeth, so he "can prove it to me"

I have an appointment this friday so he can count away, as he doesn't seem to believe me at all.

So I looked online and I found that the ring / pinion tooth count is 41-11 for 3.73 gearing, and 41-10 for 4.10 gearing. Is this correct? I would like to know the numbers of teeth before I take my truck in, just in case he tries to bull shit me.

The teeth count varies by axle, what you have might be right but just have him count the teeth in front of you, then divide the larger number by the smaller number. Example - 41/11 = 3.73

I kinda figured someone might try to BS you in some way about how you checked it. Leave it to a sleazy service manager at (what sounds like) a sleazy dealership ripping tags off axles
Also, while he's sitting there trying to count a bunch of gear teeth, you might point out the numbers that are stamped right there into the edge of the ring gear. Most (if not all) OEM gears will be stamped with either the actual ratio itself (3.73) or the tooth count numbers (41/11).

Update #2

So the dealer has now confirmed that the truck has a 3.73 gear ratio. The funny thing is that the Service Manager was in a better mood, almost helpful. The weird thing was that the service tech was pissy. He did not want to count the teeth, even though he ended up doing so. The axle tag was found in the front axle not the rear. Then the service tech tried to convince everyone that he could, that the axle was the correct one, cause in 2010 ford / mazda changed to rear disc brakes, and because of that the axle has to be 3.73. He also went on to say that all the sales documents and the website for Mazda were wrong.

The service manager is now contacting his rep with Mazda Canada to see what they have to say. I should get some info from them sometime next week. Either way the truck was built wrong or they are falsely advertising. This keeps getting interesting.

If Mazda says that the 3.73 is correct, should I still push for the 4.10 ratio because that is what was advertised? I rarely drive on the highway so the lower gearing would be better for my situation, and it may help in the future with bigger tires, and towing.

Hell yes you should push for 4.10s. Tell them you will take it as far as it needs to go until you get them, too.

I have a 2010 Ranger 2wd auto that doesn't have the rear axle tag; It was one of the first things I checked after purchase and I was suprised it was missing. I wonder if they didn't put them on the new disk brake axle?
