Mechanical-to-electric seems to be a tradeoff between lugging the engine with a metal fanblade........................or.....................lugging the engine with an alternator that has to work harder at turning a plastic fanblade....but, I'll go electic next time....
I also went electric. You don't notice much of a difference in performance. Maybe just a tiny bit better. I only could justify doing it because my fan shroud was destroyed and the fan clutch wasn't working any longer, making the fan turn full speed at all times. I needed to replace both of those so I decided to spend a little more and upgrade to an electric. I went with a Flex-a-Lite electric fan kit, made for the RBV. If I were to do it again I probably would use a junkyard fan and saved some coin.
Probably be biggest advantage of an electric fan is the ability to turn it off while crossing water so the water doesn't destroy the fan blades.
