Some of you may recal about a month ago my work truck, a 2006 ranger, was having abs issues. Any time i touched the brakes the abs activated. I notified my boss, he told.me to keep.driving till the wheels fall off. Abs are fine when you actually need them, however in perfect road conditions they actually increase stopping distance. So after a few days i called my boss again, same reply as before.

This is when i thought i'd take a look at things myself. I didn't find anything wrong with the abs, what i did find was a crapload of play in the wheel bearings. I repacked and replaced the crappy federals (plastic cages) and once again called my boss, same response yet again.

This brings me to yesterday. The truck had been driving perfectly normally till the bearings... Um... Exploded. So i called my boss to let him know i drove it till the wheel fell off. He paid me to sit in my truck for three hours till the tow showed up.

The worst part is now i'm in the spare truck. Its a tacoma, the window doesn't roll down, there's no arm rest, its got no balls whatsoever.

This could have been prevented. We have a maintenance program to prevent this kind of thing.

I just needed to share that, thanks for reading!

i just wasted 8 seconds of my life, that'll i'll never get back..

but since i'm a post whore, i'm gonna waste another 20 seconds typing this! lol

just messing w/ ya. yeah, i hate it when people are like that. simple maintenance is what makes vehicles last. that's why my b2 is in the shape it is. that's why my explorer has like 180,000 miles on it with no major work. but not everyone sees it that way.

Two years ago a family friend lost his wife and kid to a Chemical truck that was not properly maintained that rammed them at a stop light. Now, because of what your idiot boss told you about driving the truck until the wheels fall off it, I have to worry about my family driving any where near idiots who drive work vehicals that are not properly maintained!!
Your boss is an idiot, Bro!! You could have hurt yourself or killed an entire family. I am so glad that did not happen!! Watch out for crap fleet vehicals and tell somebody right away if the truck you are taking out that day feels unsafe!!!

Be safe out there, Bro!!

Everytime i called my boss i also sent an him an email just to document it. Yesterday all those emails were forwarded to my bosses boss. I think he got the message now.

For what its worth i had been keeping an eye on things and avoiding traffic at all cost even when it was driving normal. If i had the coin i'd have put timkens in there and been done with it. However i can't afford to maintain my companies truck, and its clearly not my responsibility.

My dads company is the same way, at least with the F-250's we have. One has the hub almost falling off which no one drives. Both gone around 200k with no tune up though. (watch em die now)

Good on Ya, Mate!! You did the right thing. You gotta take care of yourself!! You have proof of that with text messages and that is what can make or break a case. You covered your ass!!!!

I sport the banner just like you do. I know the importance of documentation.

I would have told him to shove it! No way I'd drive it around like that.

You know you didn't have to drive that truck.

Among all the employment laws in all the states there is nothing that says you have to do anything unsafe that isn't strictly part of the job. Driving is part of the job. Driving an unsafe vehicle is not.

If you had refused to drive it, citing the poor/unsafe condition of the vehicle, and they had fired you, that would be a nice little wrongful termination suit.

I had considered this, however that would leave me without an income, even if it were only temporarily. I'm working on getting my finances in order, setting up funds for emergencies, a house, non-existant childrens school, my project, etc... Getting terminated and hiring a lawyer would cut into the emergency fund which at this point could only sustain our household for 5 pay periods, without the legal fees.

Where it sits now.my boss got his ass chewed and we now have more than one spare truck so this won't have to happen to anyone else. Hopefully if i find myself in this situation in the future my finances will be where they need to be to take action.
