I hopped into my 87 bronco II to get some burgers for dinner, turned the key just like normal, but when I let go the starter kept going. I backed the key to the stop position and the starter was still going, I even took the key completely out of the ignition, starter still going. I popped the hood and disconnected the battery, finally it stopped. (If it would have still been going after that I probably would've had a heart attack.) If I reconnect the battery the starter goes again. What would cause this? I'm sure if someone would have seen the confused look on my face with my key in my hand and the starter still going they would have died laughing. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks John

Sounds like the solenoid or the relay is stuck in the energized position. Try this: disconnect the heavy lead that runs to the starter and reconnect the battery. Get a test light and check to see if there's power at the terminal that would normally connect to the starter. If you have that, then the relay is screwed. You may also want to check to see if the smaller lead that runs to the relay is "hot". If it is find out where it's getting power from.

I had this happen, it is the starter solinoid. Without a doubt. DONOT by any circumstance purchase a replacement from autozone or advanced, they sell inferior replacements (I bought one from each and both fried after a few weeks) go to NAPA and get a good one, thats what I did and its been a good couple of years. Ford starting systems take more amps than the rest, and they destroy cheap parts.

i wouldnt say DONT goto advance or autozone, because ive used parts from them MANY a time on many many many vehicles, and when they brake from advance or autozone they usually replace it no questions asked

I've had this happen to me, but mine was more embarrassing while I trouble shooted the problem, my first thought was to replace starter but when I reconnected the battery when finished I forgot to take the truck back out of gear (5-speed) the truck immeditly stated cranking again and being in gear it rolled forward and hit me knocked me down with suprize but luckly I got back up fast and yanked the cable back off. whew I'm glad knowone say that So don't tell anyone I told ya ok... oh ooops. So do yourself a favor and replace the selonid first. and I agree with above don't go to auto zone or advance unless you buy two so you have a backup.

Thanks, The parts stores are closed today here. We only have two, NAPA, and Car Quest, but I get all my parts from NAPA. Thanks guys I'll try this tommarow after work. Hope it works, with my luck its never something easy.

Got off work at 5:00 went to NAPA on the way home and picked up the part. Got home replaced it, bronco starts correctly now, and at 5:41 Im updating my thread at TRS. Thanks alot!!!
